Jamestown student holds carnival for students with disabilities at HMS

Ashleigh Collins, a student at Jamestown High School, recently held a carnival for students with disabilities at Hornsby Middle School and Blayton Elementary School. Ashleigh put on the entire carnival as a project to receive her Gold Award from the Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ashleigh has worked on this project since February of 2013 with Hornsby teacher, Melissa Natter. Ashleigh planned all of the carnival games, sought donations for prizes and materials, built any components needed for games, sought out volunteers, and then ran the entire carnival on Friday October 10, 2013. Approximately 25-30 students benefited from the carnival, complete with a sucker pick, ring toss, temporary tattoo station, and even a bounce house. Ashleigh worked with the Hornsby National Junior Honor Society to gain volunteers who ran the games and helped students as necessary. The NJHS plans to keep the carnival going so that it may be an annual event.
