The WJCC School Board approved a motion to begin the process to rename Rawls Byrd Elementary School at their meeting on May 24.
“Through its vote, the Board has been definitive in the directive that they want to rename the school,” said Jim Kelly, School Board Chair, said. “The process for renaming is to be determined; however, policy development will begin in June.”
The School Board’s Policy Committee will meet June 14 to review a draft of a policy for naming and/or renaming a school. Division staff have reviewed policies from the Virginia School Boards Association and other Virginia school divisions and will develop a policy for Board consideration that meets the specific needs of WJCC.
The timing of the name change is dependent on several factors including that the school is a polling place and no name change may occur within 60 days of a general election. The next general election is November 8, 2016.
The cost of the name change also is still to be determined. In addition to signs, logos and materials, there will be a cost to notify voters once a new name has been selected.
