She is a problem solver, helping resolve concerns and issues that families present. Shayna’s professionalism, competence and caring heart make her an example of a support staff person who makes a big difference for the children in the Bright Beginnings program.

Gale greets students who come into the office as they are important. She listens to their needs and seeks out answers while making sure the student feels comfortable in knowing they are safe and comfortable. Gale organizes field trips and ensures that everything the students require for the field trips are taken care of in a timely manner. Overall Gale ensures that DJ is a safe, caring learning place!

Heather knows all the children by name. She greets all the students and is their cheerleader. She is always giving praise to students and works with them individually for academic success. She helps all students find success in whatever they are attempting. She always has a smile on her face and a kind word. She sets a positive example for students.

Howard started a soccer team at James River and coaches the team on his own time. He is respected and appreciated by students and takes time to know students’ names even though he does see them regularly. Howard goes above and beyond for the students and expects the best from them encouraging them to succeed in life. He always shows students he cares about them, giving them high fives and hugs..

Vega is renowned throughout the school division for her phenomenal cooking. Every Thanksgiving Vega creates an absolutely incredible feast. Folks from all over the division, as well as our local fire fighters head to Matthew Whaley to enjoy her creations. Ms. Brown is an accomplished and talented chef in her own right. Ms. Brown serves the children each and every day making sure they have a healthy meal that they will enjoy. The atmosphere in the Matthew Whaley café is one of being at home. It is an amazing environment for the students each day knowing they are cared for and loved.

Barb Mernin has been a Teacher Assistant at Matoaka Elementary School for the past nine school years. She is highly motivated to provide exceptional support to all of the teachers and students that she works with. She goes out of her way to develop meaningful and positive relationships with everyone that she encounters. We consider Barb as a “teacher” and she is highly capable in this regard.

Fran has worked as the Senior Administrative Assistant at Norge for over 20 years and during that time all of our staff members have grown to depend on her for just about everything – finding subs, budget questions, schedules, time sheets, Novatime, copy machines. She is always warm and friendly to our students, parents and staff. Due to her caring dedication to her job, our Norge family and especially our students thrive! We can’t imagine where we would be without her.

Leslie has an unyielding optimism towards her duties as a kindergarten instructional assistant. She loves children unconditionally and collaborates with her teacher, working hand-in-hand to service students in order to advance student learning based on grade level expectations. She connects, engages and inspires students, developing responsible citizens and independent learners each and every day. Leslie is impeccably organized; she demonstrates diplomacy and thoughtfulness with her colleagues and the families she serves. She is patient and calm both in crises and tedium.

She is a positive, pleasant and nurturing figure throughout our school. The students all know Mrs. King and see her strong work ethic regularly.

Lesley goes above and beyond in preparing delicious and nutritional meals for both our students and staff. She is well organized, has a good working relationship with her staff, compassionate about the students and runs an extremely efficient cafeteria. Lesley has helped the Hornsby students by meeting their physical need for nutritional meals for both breakfast and lunch, thus providing their bodies and minds with the energy needed to be successful with their daily academics.

Pam is the consummate professional who keeps this building running smoothly. Ever present, ever helpful, and always kind Pam focuses on each of us as we enter her office and she gives her undivided attention to our requests. She is honest with her responses and seeks to make Jamestown stronger through her efforts. It is Pam’s kindness and work ethic that make her a peacemaker of the highest order. Her institutional memory of JHS and WJCC makes her an invaluable source of information.

Linda is kind, sincere, and above all hard-working. In the counseling department she is our rock, our backbone, the reason our office runs as smoothly as it does. She greets every student with a smile and is the first one to receive any new student coming to our school. Linda makes them feel welcome and creates an atmosphere of calm in what is usually a very stressful situation. She is at every football game and other extracurricular activities – she supports all of our students!

What sets her apart from so many other good support staff members is the range of areas that she covers and the depth of knowledge in those areas. Angie receives and responds to calls from parents and school workers concerning bus related issues and will answer questions or redirect calls to a supervisor that can resolve the matter. Angie’s work ethic and dedication keeps the administrative staff operating smoothly and keeps the driving staff well supported. She is the focal point for a department of 197 employees in finalizing/resolving payroll questions and concerns.
