Safe Routes to School Reminds You to “Zone in, Not Out” in the School Zone

Welcome back for another exciting school year to all WJCC students and families! A special welcome goes to WJCC’s newest Safe Routes to School target site, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School.

The National Safety Council’s School Zone Safety Tips provides great safety tips for drivers. As pointed out in the article, school days bring congestion. We ask that you please bring patience and alertness. We also recognize the growing contingent of Matthew Whaley students and parents who help to alleviate congestion at arrival and dismissal by regularly walking and biking to school!

International Walk to School Day is in just one month, October 4, 2017. We will kick off our “Walk and Roll” and “Park and Walk” incentive programs on that day to encourage and recognize students who walk and bike to school.

For some for whom walking or biking is not feasible due to infrastructure or distance, in collaboration with SHIP and BikeWalk Williamsburg,Bicycle Safety clubs will be available at selected schools again this year. Also, K-5 students will be invited to participate in division-wide bicycle rodeos.
