Safe Routes to School Health Promotion, Bicycle Safety, and Pedestrian Safety Leadership Opportunities for Parents

Mrs. Sarah White, Norge Elementary School’s Safe Routes to School Parent Champion, with daughters before a recent Walk to School Day event.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) in collaboration with BikeWalk Williamsburg is offering the opportunity for interested WJCC parents to receive Smart Cycling Certification. After certification, parents are asked to volunteer as facilitators in the spring School Health Initiative Program (SHIP) Bike Safety Clubs at Safe Routes to School target schools in the district when their schedule allows and/or assist with the districtwide Bicycle Rodeo event in May.

Nationwide, the most effective Safe Routes to School programs boost parental involvement. Safe Routes to School salutes our Parent Champions past and present including Mrs. Sarah Keatley, Mr. Mychael Willon, Mrs. Sarah White (Norge Elementary), Mrs. Rachel Lenahan (Matthew Whaley Elementary) and Mr. Tyler Thomson (Clara Byrd Baker Elementary). Currently, we are in need of Safe Routes to School Parent Champions at the following schools:

Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School
Stonehouse Elementary School
James River Elementary School

As is expected, circumstances change that impact a parent’s ability to continue to serve as a Safe Routes to School Champion from year to year. Families relocate and when students move up, parents move up as well. We also are continuing to grow as a program and have a new SRTS target site this year. If you are interested in serving as the Safe Routes to School Champion at your child’s school or are interested in getting more information about the Smart Cycling Certification course opportunity, please contact Dr. Darlene Wiggins Dockery at darlene.dockery@wjccschools.org.
