Lace up your sneakers and put on your bike helmet! Just in time for National Bike Month, Stonehouse Elementary is installing a new place to park your bike. At 8:15 am on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, Stonehouse Elementary School’s principal, staff and families will cut the ribbon on new bicycle racks. The event is sponsored by Safe Routes to School.
The idea came about after some Stonehouse parents shared that they would love to walk or bike with their children to school but found it difficult to do so. In fact, one parent went so far as to ride to school with his daughter and then carry her bike back home each day. Hearing this, the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) team collaborated with County agencies, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Sentara’s Safe Kids Historic Triangle to take action.
Following a Walk and Bicycle audit in December, SRTS secured a mini-grant from VDOT to put up the bicycle rack at the school. At the same time, staff from James City County’s Planning Office prepared suggested biking and walking route maps for the surrounding neighborhood.
We can’t wait to see the pedal power of Stonehouse families who use the new route and bike rack.
