Principal’s Newsletter, June 4th 2018

WEEK OF JUNE 4th, 2018

What’s Happening?

Good Afternoon Berkeley Families,

We are now in the final 9 days of school and we have lots of things going on both in and out of school. I will try to condense all the information in this week’s newsletter because this will be the final Principal’s newsletter for the 2017-2018 school year. With that being said, I wanted to thank all the parents and students for their support during my first year as your principal. As we look forward to next year, we will lose about 1/4 of our student population to James Blair Middle School.  Mr. Ty Harris will extend various invitations for those students moving forward to various events.  It was a pleasure and an honor serving as your principal and wish you all the best to those students who are moving up to high school or moving over to James Blair. As far as the rest of the BMS students, who are staying, I hope you have a well rested summer vacation and look forward to seeing your faces in the fall.  We  are starting with a A  day on Monday, June 4th , 2018.

SOL TESTING for this week:

Tuesday- Reading 7, Reading 8, and Civics Retakes

Wednesday- Algebra, Math 6, and Math 8 Retakes

Thursday- Science 8 Retakes- Last day of SOL Retakes

Friday- Student Laptop Collection- Please make sure your student returns his/her laptop and charger so you will not be invoiced for a lost computer.

SOL BOOT CAMP and Remediation

We will be running SOL remediation during and after school for all students during the week. Any student who scores a 375-399 on an SOL is eligible for a retest. Please make sure that you have turned in the approval letter for retakes or your child’s teacher will reach out to you this week to present any retake options to you.

Message from the Clinic:

Attention BMS Parents!

As we near the end of the school year, this is an important reminder.  If you have provided any medications to the clinic for administration at school, it is your responsibility to pick them up at the end of the school year.

  • Medication cannot be sent home with students at the end of the year.
  • Parents must come to the clinic to retrieve any unused medication by June 8, 2018. Please put a reminder in your phone or on your calendar.
  • Any medication not picked up by a parent will be discarded.
  • Any questions?  Contact BMS School Nurse, Emily Olson, RN.

BMS 8th Grade Dance- June 1st

Thanks for all the volunteers and chaperones who were able to make it to the dance. The students had a fun night and enjoyed their last dance at BMS. Everyone looked sharp and danced the night away.

STEPPING UP CEREMONY:

Students will each  receive 4 tickets on Monday June 4th and Tuesday June 5th. The event is being held on Monday, June 11th at Jamestown High School. Students should plan on arriving at 5:30 PM. The event will start at 6:00 PM. If you know that you will not need this many tickets, please let your student know so they can give away any excess tickets. The school will not be the ticket exchange and if you need more tickets, please ask around to those families that will not use their full allotment. We will not have an extra tickets, so please  plan accordingly.

School Cafeteria and Bus Behavior

Just a reminder, please have conversations with your students about behavior to and from school on the bus and at school. We had an uptick in behavior that resulted in discipline both on the bus and at school last week. Riding the school bus is a privilege and can be taken away  if there is inappropriate or dangerous behavior. Students are also creating an unnecessary mess during some of the lunch periods. Students who participate in this will be removed from the cafeteria.

BMS Field Trips:

The 6th graders will have a field trip this Monday, June 4th and Tuesday June 5th.  The 8th graders will have a field rip on Monday, June 4th. Please make sure that the permission slip and money are turned in for your student to attend. If students have received discipline, are failing classes, or are not attending school, they will be placed on the Do not participate list and will not be able to attend these field trips.
