WEEK OF FEBRUARY 11TH, 2019

What’s Happening?

Good Evening Berkeley Parents,

As we head into the middle of February, we will start our Write talks program. It will bring in various community members to serve as guest speakers while teachers can sit and provide feedback to students about their writing before the upcoming SOL. This will take place on February 14th and 15th. This week starts with an A Day on Monday, February 11th, 2019. Please be reminded that Monday, February 18th is a Holiday and there is no school for students.

After School Help

Students who need additional help may stay after school with teachers to get more help. Buses are provided and leave at 5:00 PM. Tuesdays are for Math and Science, Wednesdays are for Related Arts, and Thursdays are for Social Studies and English. All students are encouraged to stay to get that more individualized instruction. We will be reaching out to you and your child if they need additional support. After school is a great time to get a concept that you didn’t get the first time around. After School will continue starting next week.

Transportation

If there are specific problems with your bus run, please call the main office at the school 229-8051 and report them to transportation 565-0808.

Sports

Winter Season is over… Great seasons by the boys and girls basketball teams!

Baseball Tryouts on February 18th and Softball Tryouts on February 11th

Item Drop Off

Items that are brought to school will be sent down to your student during advisory period. We would like to limit the interruptions in the school day. If you bring something to your child, report to the main office and they will take care of getting it to them in a timely fashion.

8th Grade Behavior-

There are certain times  in the year that student behavior is addressed as a group by administration. Quarterly we hold assemblies and we address it before major breaks and events. Recently, we have had some of our 8th graders taking far too long to get to some of their classes and some not attending them for large amounts of time. Students will be addressed this week regarding these bad habits and in addition to school based discipline, students who continue down this path will not be permitted to attend the major events at the end of the year. These include the block party, 8th grade formal, and the Stepping Up ceremony.  Please have a conversation with your student about these events and the proper behavior to be able to attend them.

Volunteers-

This is a call for any parent who is interested in volunteering in the school. If you are interested, please send me an email at : Panagiotis.tsigaridas@wjccschools.org

In particular, I would like any available dads who can pop in and serve the school for an hour of your time. The program will be called TOP DAWGS and will feature parents who can supervise during lunch periods, mentor, and talk about their careers to our students. If you have yet not replied, please send me an email with your interest.

We will begin individual planning meetings from January 14, 2019 until March 1, 2019. We will meet with eighth grade students and families for 15-20 minutes.
