WEEK OF MAY 6th, 2019

What’s Happening?

Good Afternoon Berkeley Parents,

As we wrapped up the month of April, we had our 25th annual BMS block party last week, which was a success. We now head into the month of May and remember this week is teacher and school nurse appreciation week! Tell them how much they mean to you! SOL Testing also begins next week and it is imperative students arrive to school on time so they have the appropriate amount of time to be successful on their SOLs.  This week starts with an A Day on Monday, May 6th, 2019.

NJHS Induction ceremony

On Monday, May 6th at 6:30 we will induct new students into the NHJS. If your child is one of the students selected, we hope to see you at this event.

After School Help

Students who need additional help may stay after school with teachers to get more help. Buses are provided and leave at 5:00 PM. Tuesdays are for Math and Science, Wednesdays are for Related Arts, and Thursdays are for Social Studies and English. All students are encouraged to stay to get that more individualized instruction. We will be reaching out to you and your child if they need additional support. After school is a great time to get a concept that you didn’t get the first time around. Snacks and water will be provided to students who stay after school.

SOL Remediation

Now that MAPS testing is finished, we will be shuffling students in their daily English and Math classes to address specific strands which are weak to prepare them for the SOL test coming up in Reading and Math. Although instruction will still continue, there will be more targeted groups that are broken down in classes to address these weaknesses.

Sports- Baseball and Softball

Spring Sports has concluded. News about the fall football season will be coming soon!

Item Drop Off

Items that are brought to school will be sent down to your student during advisory period. We would like to limit the interruptions in the school day. If you bring something to your child, report to the main office and they will take care of getting it to them in a timely fashion..

BAND/THEATER/ORCHESTRA/CHOIR

Orchestra-

BMS 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Orchestras:

6th Grade Orchestra Concert at 6:00PM
Our 6th Grade Orchestra will perform at 6:00PM and should arrive at BMS at 5:30pm to report to the stage for tuning and warm-ups.  Students should wear their Berkeley Orchestra red polo shirts and black or dark colored pants.  After the performance, 6th graders will be dismissed to go home with their families, and can either stay and listen to the 7th and 8th Grade Orchestras perform or may choose to go home.  Attendance is not required for the 7th and 8th Grade concert.

7th & 8th Grade Orchestra Concert at 7:30PM
Our 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra will perform at 7:30PM and should arrive at BMS at 6:45PM (not earlier, please!) for tuning and warm-ups.  Students should wear their Berkeley Orchestra red polo shirts and black or dark colored pants. It is important that students not arrive early so that we can give our 6th grade students and families our full attention first, and then dismiss them to be ready for our 7th and 8th grade students and families.  Thank you for your help and understanding!

BMS Theatre:

BMS Theatre Night is Wednesday, May 8. The evening will include performances from our 7th grade & 8th grade advanced classes, Thespian Honor Society Inductions and a fundraising dinner from 5-6pm catered by La Terazza. Performances are free. Each year our Thespians chose a service project to benefit, this year a dinner will benefit DOCARE International, a charity that provides free medical care in underserved nations. Tickets for the catered dinner are only $10. Additionally, we will be collecting used prescription glasses to donate to the charity to be restored and distributed primarily in Guatemala
