Berkeley Theatre Department takes top honors at Virginia Theatre Middle School Competition.  Over 3000 theatre lovers from all over Virginia: Professional, College, High School, Middle School, Community, and Theatre for Youth attended the annual Virginia Theatre Conference in Norfolk. October 25-29,2017.  The Middle School Theatre Festival was held on Saturday, October 28, and our Berkeley competition team presented the one-act play The 11th. Berkeley received the Gold Award, Top Three Award, and 5 individual acting awards. Best Performance – Victoria Gallant, Damaris Arias, Mason Lane, and Connor Paulk.  All-Star Cast – Corey Aleksa

PTA Reflections Contest: Do you enjoy art, music, and dance or have an interest in writing, producing films and taking photos? Then join us and have fun unleashing your inner artist with PTA Reflections! This year’s theme, “Within Reach,” calls for your own unique interpretation through the arts. Download submission guidelines and an entry form today or pick up an application in the media center.  Deadline extended!! Return your application by Friday, November 3, 2017. 17-18 Reflections Application

Bullying Prevention Month – In an effort to show our resistance to bullying, Berkeley Middle School is hosting a video contest. Students can create a commercial, music video, public service announcement, or anything creative and representative of Bullying Prevention. Students are asked to upload their videos to YouTube, with parental permission, and include the hashtag #BMSagainstBullies in their title. This will allow your video to be found; but also, allow our talent to be showcased to a large crowd! It is asked that all videos be submitted to YouTube by October 25th. If you cannot upload to YouTube, or have any questions, please email Jordan Canaday.

Battle of the Books – Please see Mrs. Eriksen in the Media Center to sign up for the Battle of the Books. Meetings will be held on Monday’s during advisory starting October 16, 2017.

The Bulldog General School Store will open this Thursday!!! The Bulldog General will be open during lunch every Thursday. Items on sale range from pencils, tissues, school crafts, deodorant, notebooks, and more! All items are priced at a very low amount. Bring $1 and see all the cool things you can purchase! The Bulldog General will run until the end of the school year! PARENTS: If you would like to donate items for Berkeley’s Bulldog General, please contact Mr. Jordan Canaday.

Theatre Fall Play at Jamestown – Monday, October 23 @7pm @ Jamestown High.  BMS Theatre and Jamestown Theatre will be presenting their fall plays. Admission is free. Requesting canned goods for local food bank.

Box Tops – Send your collected Box Tops into your student’s homeroom teacher or drop them off in the collection bin in the Main Office. The first deadline to send in Box Tops is November 3rd. Thank you!

Tuff Enuf Announcement – We have a fun event coming up for both students and staff! On October 28, at 9 o’clock, at the Mariners’ Museum, the annual “Tuff Enuf” challenge will take place. The Tuff Enuf challenge is a 5K obstacle course for anyone willing to get a little dirty. The cost is $40 per person but can be reduced to $25 per person if you can get a group of 10 or more together to pick up a flyer/form, go to room 400 during homeroom or advisory or go online to register at www.yvchr.org, scroll down and click on “click here” under the “register as a participant” subheading next to the Tuff Enuf flyer. GSA Club –  Meetings will be on Thursdays after school in room 308. Permission forms can be picked up and dropped off in the media center.

Step Team – Tryouts this week Monday through Thursday! Tryouts will begin with a meeting in Dr. Johnson’s room in the 8th-grade hall. Permission slips were due by Wednesday, October 11 to Coach Canaday. See Mr. Canaday with any questions.

Running Club – Permission slips are no longer being accepted. Boys’ running club will start on Tuesday, October 17th and girls’ running club will start on Wednesday, October 18th.

Student Council Meeting – The student council will meet on Wednesday, October 18 from 3:05 to 4:30 in room 406.

Girls Basketball – Girls interested in trying out for the girls’ basketball team should stop by Dr. Glisan’s room, 132, to pick up a schedule. The pink flyers will be hanging outside of her room.

Congratulations, Science BowlDogs!

On their first appearance the Berkeley Science Bowl Dogs beat 19 other teams from across Virginia to win 2nd place in the Finals. They endured 4 rounds of Round Robin games in the morning, and then 4 more rounds in the Double Elimination set in the afternoon.

The Science Bowl Dogs won a big trophy and $500 for BMS.

The Science Bowl Dogs are coached by BMS Technology Teacher, Mrs. Lisa Horrell.

7th Grade Students attend Latin Day at CNU

A great group of Berkeley Latin students spent Saturday at CNU surrounded by Latin students from across Hampton Roads. The day’s activities included knowledge tests, arts and crafts contests, and a variety of sessions providing information on Roman graffiti, Roman elements in the Hunger Games, Greek folk dancing and Virginia Archaeology. Berkeley students did exceptionally well in the arts and crafts contests as each student who entered took home an award.latin competition 2
