As we move into the month of October, I wanted you to know that we will be starting an after school tutorial program this month with the William and Mary Griffin Partnership. It will focus on closing academic gaps, mentorship, and assistance with classroom work. If you are interested in this program for your student, please reach out and contact Sadie Weathers at Sadie.Weathers@wjccschools.org. We start this week on Monday October 11th , 2021 (A-DAY).
School picture day is on Friday, October 15th.
For up to the minute news and information, follow us on twitter: @BerkeleyMiddle and on instagram: @BMS_WJCC .
If your student or anyone in the household has tested Positive for COVID, or if your student has COVID symptoms and needs to remain home for quarantine, please call the nurse to get guidelines as to when they can return and what is needed for your student. The nurse will document this status and let teachers know so that they allow your student to access the live or recorded instruction through a zoom link. If you have not reached out to her, the link will not be visible on VUE for your student if they are home for quarantine. You may also reach out to your teachers to speed up the process of getting work. Students can only enter zoom meetings if they are isolating at home through the nurse or on pre-arranged absences. Students who missed the bus or do not come to school but are not under quarantine orders or pre-arranged absences will not be permitted into zooms.
We are asking that if you plan on picking up your student for any reason, that you come no later than 2:30 PM. We will not dismiss students after 2:30 until the car line group is dismissed. If you have issues with buses, call transportation at 757-565-0808.
SCA- The SCA met this week and will put out their spirit days for our spirit week this year. Be on the look out and please participate. You may win a prize for the best costume on the theme days.
Music Studio-We are excited to announce the launch of the Berkeley Middle School Bulldog Recording Studio! Mr. Ward will be helping students interested in recording their instrument, singing, rapping, podcasting, making beats, or even narrating a video for a project. All content must be appropriate for school in accordance with WJCC Rules. Mr. Ward will be available after school on Wednesdays starting October 20th. Students can work individually or collaboratively on a project, however, due to limited space, a maximum of 5 students may sign up per day. Sign up outside of the band room, which is room 226, down the related arts hallway. No experience is required, but please come with a plan of what you want to accomplish.
Just a quick reminder: The hours of school are 8:00 AM to 2:50 PM. Please make every effort to bring your student prior to 8:00AM. We have reminded people during drop off but we still are getting many students arriving late.
Masks must be worn on the bus before coming to school and at school all day with the exception being at lunch. Please make sure your student has a mask available. We have had several students consistently forgetting their mask or not making it a priority. It puts everyone at risk if contact tracing occurs and a student is riding a bus without a mask on. The school has supplied those in a last minute emergency but we are unable to give out 50-100 masks a day. Students who are in repeated violation will have to call a parent to bring in a mask before it becomes a code of conduct issue.
Student grades are important and moving to next 9 weeks, any student who has multiple F’s will not be able to try out for sports until they raise their grades. Teachers are available after school and students should take advantage of that to help raise up their grades.
Throughout the month of October, the School Counseling Department will continue to honor National Bullying Prevention Month with our BMS Bulldogs! This will be the focus of our classroom lessons throughout the month, as well as our various program initiatives to raise awareness within our school by standing together to be upstanders against bullying. Be on the lookout for additional school-wide efforts to stand together against bullying through pledges, writing prompts, a unity chain, and even a spirit week! More information to come next week.
A few resources that may be helpful in reviewing with your child/children are listed below:
The first round of small groups has started! Students are recommended for groups by their homeroom teachers, but we also take parent referrals, so if you feel like your child/children may benefit from participating in a small group, please let us know!
Key Club Partnership – Self-Love, Self-Esteem, Positive Self-Talk, and Goal Setting are just a few of the topics covered in the SEL lessons provided per a JHS student and the Key Club to teach you how you can take the initiative on your own, to boost your self-esteem! The lessons are on Nearpod, and consist of games, interactive videos, informative slides, open ended questions and more! Each lesson is self-paced and should take about 45 minutes to complete. It is suggested to complete one lesson a week, but it is completely up to you how long you take to go through the lessons! For the curriculum, the only supplies you would need are paper, a pencil and occasionally additional supplies that are listed in the lesson. We encourage your child/children to preview the content!
We will also continue/conclude our Minute Meetings with all students on our case load. This is an opportunity for us to meet with your child/children one on one, allowing them to meet with us and to quickly chat about the first few weeks of school and/or if there is anything your child/children may need at the moment. It is our hope to conduct Minute Meetings during the mid-year and end-of-year time frames as well. We encourage you to ask your child/children if they’ve met their School Counselor for a Minute Meeting!
We look forward to kicking off our lessons this week with students! As a reminder, Ms. Carlton is assigned to students with last names A-L and Ms. Gilchrist is assigned to students with last names M-Z. Our contact information is below!

We understand thatattending school during these times has caused us to do a lot of things differently but, the one thing that hasn’t changed is our attendance policy.
Please refer to these important Attendance reminders:
Parents/guardians must send notes via email or fax to excuse a student’s absence. (Doctors appointments, vacations, death in family, etc.)
Who to contact: BMS Attendance Associate
Email:Sarah.Ayala@wjccschools.org or Selena.Chamblee@wjccschools.org
Fax: (757) 565-9491
If your student has had the covid vaccine, please turn in a copy of their card to the school nurse, Emily Olson. You may take a picture of it on your cell phone and email it to her at firstname.lastname@example.org
This is helpful information for the nurse to have when conducting contact tracing.
If you have been considering getting a covid shot for your student, there will be a vaccine clinic at BMS on Thursday October 14 from 0930-1030am, and then a second shot follow up on November 8, from 0815-0915am. The shot can be administered to anyone who is at least 12 years old and is free of charge. It can be administered while your student is here in the building, with a signed parental consent.
Please do not send your student to school if they are experiencing any symptoms of illness. WJCC Mitigation Guidelines require that if your student must leave school during the day due to illness, he/she will be sent home for a period of 10 days. Early re-entry prior to the 10-day period will require a negative covid test or a note from the physician clearing them for return to the building.
