As previously announced, WJCC Schools is offering middle and high school students in yearlong credit courses the option to receive a final grade calculated using an average of Marking Period 1, 2, and 3 grades OR a “P” (Pass) grade indicating completion of the course. When considering taking a “P” for a final grade in place of a letter grade it is important to know how this may impact your GPA and transcript.

How does this impact my GPA and Transcript?

When considering taking a “P” for a final grade in place of a letter grade, it is essential to know how this may impact your GPA and transcript. Courses with a “P” will appear on a student’s transcript and do count towards the student’s graduation requirements. They will not, however, carry any weighted credit and will not be included in a student’s GPA. WJCC Schools guidelines for weighted courses are on page 5 of the 2019-2020 Program of Studies. It is recommended you review your current GPA and any impacts a “P” may have on it. NOTE: When calculating your GPA, courses with a final grade of “P” should not be included in either the overall credit count or within quality points.

If your middle school child is taking a course for high school credit and considering taking a “P” rather than final letter grade that is a C or a D, you are encouraged to connect with your child’s teacher to discuss the content of the course. In some cases, it may better to expunge your child’s record of the course and repeat the class. Repeating this course will help ensure your child has the foundational knowledge necessary to be successful in future years of the content.

What do colleges/universities think of a “P” as a final grade?

College administrators know that many grading practices are changing during this unprecedented school closure. The school profile, where colleges get grading information, will be updated to reflect WJCC Schools grading practices for Spring 2020.

Currently, some colleges and universities are stressing the importance of students meeting graduation requirements and remaining within the schools’ recommended GPA requirement. For some colleges, a final grade of “P” won’t negatively impact admissions decisions. Other colleges and universities recommend that if given a choice between a “P” and a traditional letter grade, students take the letter grade. What if I want to be an athlete in college?

The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) has academic standards that college-bound and continuing student-athletes must meet to participate in NCAA sports. Current guidance, included in the 4/17 update from NCAA regarding is:

“For NCAA-approved core courses completed in Spring/Summer 2020 that have been issued a grade of “Pass,” the Eligibility Center will apply the credit earned in these courses toward the core-course requirement in the student’s certification. If the student’s core-course GPA would increase by assigning a value of 2.300, this value will be assigned to the Passed courses. However, if the student’s core-course GPA would decrease by including the 2.300 value for Passed courses, the student’s core-course GPA will be calculated based only on courses with assigned letter grades from other available terms (credit from these courses will still be applied toward the student’s core-course requirements).

Note: This policy will apply to students from all grade levels (e.g., freshmen, sophomores) who successfully complete NCAA-approved Pass/Fail courses in Spring/Summer 2020.”
