SNAME

2015 SNAME Boat Design Competition

2015 SNAME Boat Design Competition –

Congratulations to all seven Jamestown student teams for finishing the SNAME Boat Design Competition and for once again showing that Eagle Engineers are amazing!

Sponsored by Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) Boat Design Competition exposes students to the excitement of the shipbuilding industry. Students are challenged in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by working through the entire ship design process. Students learn essential skills like teamwork, leadership, project planning, engineering, design, drawing development, and design validation methods. Out of the 42 original team registrations from 12 different high schools, only 27 teams actually finished.  All of Jamestown’s teams have completed this rigorous project over the past seven years. This year, four of the seven Eagle entries were chosen as top 12 candidates. We extend special congratulations, this year, to three Jamestown teams: Turtle Destruction, Yachta Yachta, and Your Worst Anenome for being selected as Finalists in the competition.  The Fourth finalist is Crabber Seafarer, from Hampton High. (Yes, we nearly swept the entire competition!) The four finalist boats are being built to the teams’ specifications and will be raced in two different heats to determine the overall winner.  This honor has gone to Jamestown High School for three of the six years that we have entered. The other schools are gunning for The Eagles. All trophies will be awarded on race day, Saturday, May 9th at Lake Maury, behind the Mariners Museum from 9:30 -1:30. Please come and cheer for Jamestown’s teams!
