This month is black history month. Black History month started in 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for Negro Life announced that the second week of February would be Negro History Week. Woodson wanted a week to celebrate the accomplishments of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora because historically, the history of African American people was omitted from United States history. Over time, Negro history week became Black History month.
