Pictured (above) from left to right, rising juniors, Audrey Root and Rachel Smith stand in front of the ‘Cascades’ waterfalls on Little Stoney Creek, a New River tributary, near Pembroke, Virginia, during the stream and water quality portion of their camp training. Youth Conservation Camp is an environmental science program open to only selected science students from Virginia. During this weeklong program, sponsored by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Districts, students learn from hands-on studies of lake and stream ecology, soils, fisheries, forestry, wildlife and agriculture. They were taught by Virginia Tech’s faculty along with other state resource personnel.
Three rising JHS tenth grade students placed within the top 10% out of 54 of Virginia’s top science students at the June 2017 Virginia Department of Forestry sponsored Forestry Camp.
