The Library is open for student use every school day. There are over 12,000 books, 25 computers, local and national newspapers, popular and professional magazines, as well as three staff members available to facilitate student research and reading.
Passes are required for individual students who come to the Library during school hours. Students are asked to sign in and out when they enter and leave the Library.
Teachers often schedule time for class use of the Library. The teacher and librarians collaborate to provide access to the resources the students need to complete the assignment and keep students actively engaged in the assignment. The library subscribes to EasyBib to help with research, source citation, and online note taking. If students need help creating an account, they should contact one of the librarians. Additionally, the library website provides access points for Gale databases, eLibrary, CultureGrams, and WorldBook Online Encyclopedia. Passwords are available for students who need to access these resources from home.
- Computers: Use of computers in the Library is regulated by the Network Acceptable Use and Responsibility Policy, which is posted at every workstation. According to the Williamsburg-James City County School Board, the computer network is to be used to âsupport research and instruction ⦠use for any non-educational purpose ⦠is not acceptable.â
- Printing and Scanning: The library has two printers and a scanner available for student use. There is no charge for printing class assignments; however, students should ask before printing multiple pages.
- Circulation: Students are welcome to check out up to four books from the Library. Calculators, headphones, digital cameras, and other equipment is also available for overnight checkouts. All overnight loans are due back by 7:10 a.m.
Reserve book carts are assembled when necessary to provide equitable access to resources, especially when more than one class is studying a topic. Reserve books are not checked out except at the direction of the teacher(s) for whom the reserve book cart was assembled.
Students who have overdue materials may be allowed to checkout books at the discretion of the librarian, and overdue notices are sent out periodically throughout the school year. Students should respond promptly to overdue notices. Students are responsible for payment of any material that is lost or damaged while checked out in their name. All library accounts must be cleared prior to graduation in order for students to march at graduation.
