Job Summary
This position Supervises, coordinates, and inspects workers engaged in skilled and semi-skilled construction, installation, and repair of wooden structures and fixtures.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares sketches and diagrams for carpenters, and examines blueprints to determine dimensions of structure.
- Procures materials and structural units, such as lumber, prefabricated doors and cabinets of wood or plastic, and paneling, and inspects them to insure conformance with provisions of building code and local ordinance.
- Determines sequence of activities concerned with fabrication, assembly, and erection of structure.
- Installs doors, builds stairs, and repairs playground equipment; builds picture frames, signs, bulletin boards, and fences.
- Repairs floors and ceilings; builds partitions and shelves. Replaces and repairs hardware and locks on doors.
- Supervises the work of carpenters; recommends a variety of personnel actions such as hiring, promotion, disciplining, etc.
- Assigns workers to such tasks as cutting material to size, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework, etc.
- Inspects work in progress and on completion for satisfactory performance and provide technical advice and assistance when needed.
- Manages the School Division access key system.
- Repairs, or oversees repairs to, roofing, gutters, and downspouts.
- Coordinates with JCC Grounds annual maintenance of playgrounds and mulch.
- Oversees and facilitates the maintenance of outdoor storm drains with outside contractors.
- Facilitates tree/bush pruning and removal as necessary. Coordinates the work with in-house resources, JCC Grounds, and outside contractors.
- Builds and erects scaffolds for buildings; installs ladders, handrails, walkways, and platforms.
- Replaces broken windows and window frames.
- Constructs and repairs cabinets, tables, desks, and other types of furniture.
- Ensures the proper safety equipment required is on the job site and utilized in the proper fashion.
- Makes cost estimates of contract work and monitors and inspects work of contractors.
- Assists Supervisor for Facilities with asbestos surveillance and asbestos records management.
- Assists Supervisor for Facilities with OSHA compliance and records management.
- Conducts annual playground, gymnasium, and parking lot inspections and facilitates necessary repairs.
- Acts as active member of WJCC emergency response team, coordinating and implementing emergency preparations in advance of storms and acting as early responder after weather events or building system failures to contain, investigate, and remediate damage, clear snow and ice, and remove branches.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Extensive experience as journeyman carpenter.
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the state of Virginia.
- Must have a good driving record based upon the criteria of the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools division.
- Thorough knowledge of the acceptable standards of the trade.
- Knowledge of the tools and terminology of the carpentry trade.
- Demonstrated supervisory ability.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Basic computer skills
- Work on high-reach equipment
- Ability to drive forklift
Supervision Exercised
Supervises the work of carpenters and other personnel as assigned. Supervises and coordinates work with outside contractors.
Supervision Received
Performs duties under the supervision of the Supervisor for Facilities and Capital Projects who provides instructions and directions as needed.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Frequent interruptions, changing priorities.
- Ability to perform duties outside in extremely hot and extremely cold weather conditions
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to stand, stoop and bend for long periods of time.
- Ability to work in various types of environmental conditions.
- Ability to use hand and power tools.
- Ability to work on ladders and powered man lifts.
