Job Summary
This position is responsible for providing leadership, alignment, coordination and delivery in the development and improvement of the Division’s elementary level English/ language arts curriculum program for the school division. The coordinator ensures that resources are available for teacher and student use and provides the necessary staff development for implementation of the assigned instructional program.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops a philosophy for the Elementary English/language arts curriculum which is research-based and which provides guidelines for developing the curriculum.
- Develops a scope and sequence; sets goals, objectives, and exit standards; and identifies strategies appropriate for implementing the Elementary English/language arts curriculum. Works with Reading Specialists, Grade Level Leads and Teachers to develop and revise curriculum as needed.
- Plans and leads teacher professional learning experiences in order to keep staff up-to-date in best practices for Elementary English/language arts.
- Meets and works with Grade Level Leaders and Reading Specialists to create division common assessments and plan for the Elementary English/language arts programs.
- Chairs textbook adoption committees for Elementary English/language arts.
- Evaluates and disseminates curricular materials and resources to the appropriate personnel in each school
- Serves as liaison with appropriate personnel in the Virginia Department of Education and local school divisions.
- Actively participates in local, state and national professional organizations related to Elementary English/language arts as well as professional development.
- Works closely with other coordinators to plan and implement Elementary English/language arts curriculum throughout all subject area, as well as professional learning offerings.
- Collaborates with Central Office personnel to plan the WJCC Public Schools Summer Program.
- Works closely with principals to review assessment data and respond to building needs in Elementary English/ language arts.
- Conducts classroom observations to provide formative feedback to teachers.
- Works closely with the Secondary English/language arts coordinator to ensure comprehensive K-12 vertical articulation.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
- Master’s Degree in education administration and five (5) years of teaching experience.
- Certification in Administration and Supervision PreK-12-Central Office Only or Administration and Supervision PreK-12 preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership ability in organizing and working with other individuals or groups.
- Knowledgeable concerning English/language arts and reading; assessment practices; state and national reports related to curriculum. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with teachers, administrators, parents, and other community representatives.

Performs duties under the supervision of the Senior Director for Curriculum and Instruction.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must have high tolerance for change and the ability to work on several projects and assignments concurrently. Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups. Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with a minimum of supervision. Demanding schedule includes morning, evening, and weekend meetings. Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift 25 pounds.
