Job Summary
This position is responsible for providing leadership, alignment, coordination and delivery in the development and improvement of the Division’s grades K-12 curriculum program for the school division. The coordinator ensures that resources are available for teacher and student use and provide the necessary staff development for implementation of the assigned instructional program. The coordinator is also responsible for providing professional development activities and professional growth opportunities for teachers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops a philosophy for the science curriculum which is research-based and which provides guidelines for developing the curriculum.
- Develops a scope and sequence; sets goals, objectives, and exit standards; and identifies strategies appropriate for implementing the science curriculum. Works with Curriculum Review committee to revise curriculum as needed.
- Plans and leads teacher in-service and summer workshops in order to keep staff up-to date in science. Meets and works with curriculum leaders and chairpersons to plan for science programs.
- Develops a budget to support Division goals as they relate to Science. Assists staff at the building level as they submit their budget requests.
- Evaluates and disseminates materials and resources to the appropriate personnel in each school.
- Chairs textbook adoption committees for science.
- Meets with parent and community groups to discuss and share ideas concerning the science programs.
- Serves as liaison with appropriate personnel in the Virginia Department of Education and local school divisions.
- Actively participates in local, State and national professional organizations related to science.
- Works closely with other coordinators in planning and coordinating science curriculum with other curricula.
- Works closely with principals to respond to building needs in science.
- Plans and coordinates secondary summer school program.
- Oversees Title II and Title V grants.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
Must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices; of curriculum, instruction, and assessment; comprehensive knowledge of specialty area; knowledge and effective skills textbook selection, curriculum development and budget development. Must have the ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems; ability to guide and train teachers in effective instructional techniques and strategies; ability to develop and present ideas effectively, orally and in written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, teachers, staff and the general public.
Master’s Degree in education administration and five (5) years of teaching experience. Certification in Administration and Supervision PreK-12-Central Office Only or Administration and Supervision PreK-12 required.
Supervision Exercised
Coordinates activities of curriculum leaders. Supervises work of curriculum committees and summer workshop participants.
Supervision Received
Performs duties under the supervision of the Senior Director for School Performance.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Highly diverse and complex duties. Must have high tolerance for change and the ability to work on several projects and assignments concurrently. Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups. Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with a minimum of supervision. Demanding schedule includes morning, evening, and weekend meetings
