Job Summary

Provides leadership to ensure effective implementation of Student Services initiatives in the areas of student discipline, bullying prevention. Ensures the department follows local, state and federal policies and regulation in the identified areas of supervision, maintains efficient and effective work relations with staff, and coordinates contract services for community service agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages division level disciplinary matters to include scheduling and leading discipline hearings, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness of hearing evidence and documentation, referring hearings to the School Board and preparation of hearing documents
  • Ensures that the Code of Student Conduct and the disciplinary process and procedures are managed effectively, consistently, efficiently, and legally as set forth in School Board policies.
  • Serves as the division’s Bullying Prevention Coordinator.
  • Assists schools with providing a safe environment that is conducive to learning and free from disruptions by ensuring the establishment of guidelines for student conduct that are acceptable and appropriate within the school environment.
  • Analyzes data to determine trends in student discipline and guide training for school staff
  • Implements the bullying prevention initiative to include communication, training and data monitoring
  • Ensures consistent implementation of procedures regarding out-of-zone requests
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Serves as Hearing Officer.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Student Services

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Master’s degree with Virginia certification in Administration and Supervision (K-12). Minimum of five years teaching experience in a public school setting, previous building level administrative experience preferred.
  • Ability to establish effective professional working relationships and to communicate effectively with parents, students and staff in order to mediate disputes and explain school system policies and programs, including effective written communication.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices for disciplinary procedures, bullying prevention, attendance and response to intervention/multi-tier systems of support processes.
  • Ability to initiate, design, and develop new programs and procedures.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Highly diverse and complex duties.  Must have high tolerance for change and the ability to work on several projects and assignments concurrently.  Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups.  Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with a minimum of supervision.  Demanding schedule includes morning, evening, and weekend meetings.
