Job Summary

This position is responsible for daily operations of HVAC systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitors and maintains refrigeration equipment.
  • Monitors and maintains HVAC controls in the system.
  • Insures completion of required documentation.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and emergency work orders as work load dictates.
  • Insures compliance with all applicable policies and procedures and with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics and repair/operations/parts manuals as necessary.
  • Performs all work in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Performs as a coordinator/inspector when new HVAC systems are installed in the schools.
  • Insures work area is maintained in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Is on call as necessary and will respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and procedures.
  • Monitors and maintains gas equipment and appliance.
  • Maintains pressure vessels.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Completion of an apprentice program including course work in air conditioning, refrigeration equipment, or apprentice type training, working as an air conditioning/refrigeration mechanic or any equivalent combination of experience and training with a commercial firm, government employment, or military service.
  • Extensive experience as a journeyman HVAC mechanic.
  • Knowledge of theory, application, diagnostics, and trouble shooting associated with fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems.
  • Knowledge of theory, application, diagnostics, and trouble shooting associated with electrical systems.
  • Possession of valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Virginia.
  • Must have a good driving record based upon the criteria of the Williamsburg-James City County School Division.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, use test instrumentation, and use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to use computer hardware and software programs for preventative maintenance activity.
  • Basic computer skills

Supervision Exercised

Supervises the work of HVAC technicians and the work of students, summer workers and other personnel as assigned.

Supervision Received

Performs duties under the supervision of the Coordinator for Facilities and the Trades Foreman.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Frequent deadlines, changing priorities, works in high areas and close quarters, works outside in inclement weather, must become familiar with energy management systems and computer programs.  Often works alone.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, stoop and bend for long period of time.
  • Ability to work in various types of environmental conditions.
  • Ability to use hand power tools.
