Job Summary

This position is responsible for scheduling and conducting bus driver and bus attendant training classes, maintaining training records, supplies, and equipment and answering telephone calls.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and implements the driver training and safety program in accordance with School Board policies, Virginia Department of Education, State and Federal laws.
  • Conducts defensive driving practices and on-the-job training to persons applying for school bus driver and bus attendant positions.
  • Maintains all training records (New drivers, Aides, In-Service training, CPR, First Aid and remedial training)
  • Schedules and conducts the following classes: New drivers, Aides, In-Service training, CPR, First Aid and remedial/ refresher training as determined by supervisory staff.
  • Schedules D.O.E. physicals for all CDL licensed school bus drivers, D.O.T. physicals for the school division mechanics.
  • Performs dispatch duties on a daily basis.
  • Assists in providing school bus stop information for parents and administrators.
  • Reviews school bus video cameras in support of complaints and inquiries.
  • Maintains training equipment and orders supplies.
  • Conducts Virginia D.O.E. required school bus evacuation drills (8VAC20-70110) for Pre-school, Special Ed, Elementary, Middle and High school students twice annually.
  • Ensures that all Behind the Wheel trainers meet the requirements of (8VAC20-70-280) and (8VAC20-70-280) in order to stay certified as Behind the wheel Instructors (8VAC20-70-420).
  • Drives a school bus during high absenteeism or in emergency situations.
  • Performs duties at the James City County Emergency Operations Center representing WJCC Schools following the emergency operations plan for Radiological, weather and other emergency situations.
  • Responds to vehicle accidents to gather necessary information.
  • Active member of the School Emergency Response Team (SERT).

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Three to five years’ experience as a school bus driver transporting students.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the State of Virginia. Must have a good driving record based upon the criteria of the Williamsburg-James City County School Division. Must be at least 21 years of age and must submit a 5-year driving history and have a point balance of > -4.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office products to include Word and Excel required.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety requirements, Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations pertaining to school bus operations is required.
  • Must obtain and maintain an American Red Cross Instructor’s Certificate and a Department of Motor Vehicle third party tester certificate annually.
  • Must obtain and maintain D.O.E. Instructor Certification for school bus drivers every 5 years. Must be able to comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements governing DMV Third Party Testers.
  • Must be able to pass a National Criminal Background check (FBI) in order to maintain DMV Third Party Tester Certification.
  • Ability to operate: a large commercial vehicle with students in all types of road and weather conditions; two-way communication radio; wheelchair lifts; and perform pre-trip inspections.
  • Excellent communication skills necessary to positively interact with the students and staff members. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, other school division personnel, and the general public.

  • Prior supervisory skills preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Must be able to handle frequent interruptions and deadlines to include changes in schedules due to special student activities to include early dismissal, etc. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.  Ability to reach, bend, and stoop.  Ability to move about the bus and office space.  Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.  Must be able to meet the requirements of the annual DOE physical. Must be able to read and hear directions to maintain safety.  Ability to perform in a stressful environment, keep a cool head in emergencies, and to make critical decisions quickly. Exposure to gasoline and diesel fumes, oil, and other cleaning supplies. Must be physically able to comply with drug and alcohol testing requirements as outlined by federal, local and school board policies.
