Job Summary
This position is responsible for assisting the Director of Transportation and the Assistant Transportation Coordinator by instructing and directing the activities of bus drivers, bus assistants, and substitute drivers in the safe, timely, reliable, efficient, and economical transportation coverage of over 400 bus runs daily. Maintains a working knowledge of all runs in order to split or double runs when short of drivers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Identifies and assigns personnel to cover open runs.
- Maintains accurate/up-to-date run sheets for every driver.
- Provides copies and instructions when filling open runs.
- Communicates with drivers, aides, school personnel, and the public concerning school bus stop and routing issues.
- Maintains essential telephone rosters.
- Assists in emergency planning and execution and supports emergency operation duties.
- Answers inquiries and provides timely and appropriate responses to parental inquiries and concerns.
- Coordinates bus-related issues with school personnel.
- Maintains CDL in order to drive a school bus run when required.
- Monitors and maintains multiple school calendars.
- Places correspondences in employee mailboxes.
- Operates office equipment.
- Compiles information for leave reports.
- Assists with field trip data entry and field trip notification.
- Assists in developing bus runs.
- Assists in personnel assignments.
- Assists in identifying bus/special equipment requirements.
- Updates “Twitter” each morning with schedule/run changes.
- Ability to access routing software in order to retrieve data.
- Monitors and appropriately responds to all bus radio calls.
- Maintains daily log; ensures smooth transition from morning shift to afternoon shift.
- Participates, as necessary, at IEP meetings, staff meetings, safety meetings, and consultative meetings.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Possess a current Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with all required endorsements to operate a school bus.
- Past experience as a school bus driver for a minimum of three (3) years.
- Maintain a good driving record, better than a -4 point balance.
- Knowledge of the city/county street network.
- Knowledge of the operation of a school bus transportation operation.
- Certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and First Aid.
- Must have computer knowledge including Windows, word processing, and spread sheets.
- Ability to enter data correctly into various software systems.
- Ability to interpret and follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, other school division personnel, and the general public.
- Prior supervisory skills preferred.

Performs duties under the supervision of the Assistant Coordinator for Transportation.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must be able to handle frequent interruptions and deadlines to include changes in schedules due to special students activities to include early dismissal, etc. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to reach, bend, and stoop. Ability to move about the bus and office space. Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted. Must be able to meet the requirements of the annual DOT physical. Able to follow instructions and complete tasks efficiently. Must be able to read and hear directions to maintain safety and perform in a stressful environment, keep a cool head in emergencies, and to make critical decisions quickly.
