Is my child well enough to go to school?

Many parents are concerned about when to keep children who have been ill home.

The following is intended to help parents with this decision:

Your child should stay home if he/she:

  • has a fever of 100or more (should remain at home for 24 hours after fever is gone)
  • has vomited or has diarrhea (should remain at home for 24 hours after vomiting and/or diarrhea has stopped)
  • has a persistent cough
  • has any rash
  • has open or draining skin sores
  • has inflamed or draining eyes or ears

If your child is well enough to attend school, but must have medication during the day, all school clinics are staffed with registered Public School Nurses.  If you are not familiar with the Williamsburg-James City County School medication policy, please contact the nurse at your child’s school.

Please do not ask that your child be excused from movement class after an illness unless the request is accompanied by a physician’s note.

If a modification in activity is needed for a short time, contact the movement or classroom teacher.

Working together we can help prevent the spread of disease and limit the days of school missed due to illness.
