Ford’s Colony volunteers were recently the cover story of the Ford’s Colony magazine. We’re thrilled to have Ford’s Colony Volunteers for Education as a school partner!
We are fortunate to have a diverse group of volunteers from our community. Tutors volunteer in the classrooms, work with students individually, and also in small groups.
Mrs. Miller’s 4th grade classes enjoyed their first “book tastings” of the year last week. Students sampled books from a variety of genres and made notes about those they might like to try. What a tasty way to start the school year!
Shelby the tortoise is back for another year of helping students learn about the unique animals in our world. She is cared for by Mr. Spence’s 5th-grade students who ensure that she is fed, watered, has plenty of attention, and gets outside as much as possible to enjoy the sunshine. 5th graders also participate in the “wedge club” and learn to care for the many different species on display in our living science area.
Former Matoaka student Alex Hedstrom completed his Eagle Scout service project by painting a mural of Virginia on the playground blacktop in back of the school. Students will be able to use the color coded mural to learn about regions of Virginia. Alex was assisted by other members of his troop. Our thanks to Alex for choosing to benefit Matoaka with his project!
Matoaka Elementary has earned the distinction of being named a School of Excellence by the National Parent Teacher Association for the second year in a row thanks to the hard work of our PTA board and members. The Matoaka PTA supports academic, cultural, healthy living, and athletic programs for our students. If you are a member of the Matoaka community and have not done so, please consider supporting our school by joining the PTA. Membership forms can be found here.
