Fifth-grade teacher and “Living Wedge” director Mr. Spence has adopted a 40-year-old tortoise to keep Matoaka’s resident tortoise company. The new arrival, “Sully,” will winter over in the wedge with Shelby, the Matoaka tortoise, while looking forward to spending time outside in the spring in a larger yard that will provide both tortoises plenty of room for exploration and fresh air.
The PTA held Family Fun Days throughout the fall at Fox Wire Farm in Toano–an Alpaca farm–where students and families enjoyed fascinating farm tours.
The Buddy Bench is a safe, welcoming place for students to go on the playground when they need a friend to play with or help finding something fun to do. All students are watchers and invite friends who are sitting on the bench to either play or walk and talk. Students are taught that the answer is always “Yes!” when a friend asks to play. The Buddy Bench is the result of a collaboration between Matoaka’s occupational therapist, speech therapist, physical education teacher, school counselor, and volunteers from the King of Glory church who constructed and painted the bench.
