Matoaka PTA’s own Karen Talley is the winner of this year’s National PTA Life Achievement Award! Matoaka principal Andy Jacobs announced the award at the PTA Council sponsored screening of the film Screenagers on May 17th. Congratulations to Mrs. Talley on receiving national recognition for her dedication to both Matoaka Elementary and Hornsby Middle Schools through the many roles she has served on both PTAs. We are proud of and grateful for her many years of dedicated service to our schools and to our community!
Operation “Mission Possible” took Matoaka by storm the week before SOL testing. Organized by operatives Harris and Westbrook (aka “school counselors”), recruits were given a variety of objectives to complete to prepare them for their final mission: Operation SOL. We know that our young recruits have the skills, the talent, and motivation to succeed in achieving their final objectives!
April was Month of the Military Child. Matoaka school counselors organized events throughout the month to celebrate and support our students who are part of military families. Events included Purple Up Day, Camouflage Day, and an ice cream social for military children and their families. We appreciate the sacrifices military children and their families make on behalf of their loved ones in the service!
Renowned Patriots player and NFL Hall of Fame inductee Andre Tippett spoke to Matoaka 5th graders about setting and achieving goals in school and in life. He movingly described how he rose through the ranks with determination and focused athletic achievement to become part of multiple Super Bowl winning teams for the Patriots. After encouraging students to stay focused, prepare for, and treat the upcoming Standards of Learning tests much like a sports competition, Mr. Tippett kindly signed autographs for his throngs of young admirers.
Both Matoaka soccer teams, lower grades and upper grades, ended their highly successful season on a positive note. The lower grades team won their final game 3-1, and the upper grades team tied 2-2, and both teams won their championship games against James River Elementary. Congratulations to our players and coaches on a season filled with hard work and many winning games!
Students from Matoaka participated in a recent “flash mob” dance at the Williamsburg Farmer’s Market. They were there to demonstrate the importance of exercise – and to remind everyone that exercise can be fun!
