Duct Tape the Principal Fundraiser

Principal Andy Jacobs graciously agreed to partner with the Matoaka PTA in a “Duct Tape the Principal” fundraiser to support the Huffman Falcons, a Texas school that was damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Thanks to Mr. Jacob’s patience and to the enthusiastic support of staff, students, and families, Matoaka raised $1,530 to send to Huffman to aid in their post-hurricane recovery efforts! Way to go Cardinals!

As part of our emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) infused project based learning, 5th graders created, tested, refined, and retested paper airplane designs – and they enjoyed a beautiful day outside for their trials! Who knows, maybe there is a future aeronautical engineer out there on the blacktop!

Recycling Rangers

Matoaka Recycles!

The Recycling Rangers are up and running for the 2017-2018 school year! This group of 5th graders, under the supervision of teacher Trish Girard, coordinates the recycling program throughout the school. They create posters and other educational materials to inform staff and students what can be recycled, and ensure that all recyclable materials are picked up each week. These students are helping to care for our planet one recycling bin at at time!Recycling Rangers

Matoaka Earns WJCC Energy Efficiency Leader Award for 2016-17

Matoaka has earned the WJCC Energy Efficiency Leader award for the 2016-2017 school year! The Matoaka community not only strives to be energy efficient, but also as environmentally friendly as possible by reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling. The fifth grade “Recycling Rangers” team coordinates the school’s recycling efforts under the guidance of 5th grade teacher Trish Girard.

 

Open House Kicks Off the 2017-2018 School Year

During the annual Open House students and parents got an opportunity to meet this year’s teachers, bring in their school supplies, tour the building, check out the new critters in the wedge, demonstrate some creativity, and meet new and old friends. Everyone is ready to jump into a great school year!

Matoaka Earns Board of Education Excellence Award

Matoaka has earned another Board of Education Excellence Award for 2017! This award is given to schools meeting all state and federal accountability benchmarks while also making significant progress toward increased student achievement. Teachers Prepare for the New School Year

Matoaka teachers joined others across the WJCC district in professional development sessions to prepare for the upcoming school year. STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities and encouraging creative problem-solving with students using materials such as duct tape were the focus of hands-on sessions at Matoaka. 5th grade teacher John Spence was a featured performer at the annual convocation ceremony, accompanied by other WJCC teachers and a current student.
