Members of the Matoaka Student Council Association attended the November 28th Williamsburg-James City County school board meeting to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and to learn about the role of the school board.

Eagle Scout Completes Outdoor Classroom

Nate Baker completed the outdoor learning classroom he has been building at Matoaka as his Eagle Scout project. Thanks to Nate, students at Matoaka can enjoy fresh air and sunshine while still in class. Congratulations to Nate on being promoted to Eagle Scout and thank you for building this wonderful addition to our school!

Author Victoria Jamieson Visits Matoaka

Thanks to a partnership with the Williamsburg Regional Library author Victoria Jamieson visited Matoaka 3rd-5th grade students to speak with them about her picture books and graphic novels. She discussed where she gets her ideas, the rough draft and editing processes, and how her books finally become published works. Ms. Jamieson also spoke about participating in roller derby and how being on a roller derby team inspired her graphic novel Roller Girl. Victoria Jamieson

At the annual PTA sponsored Donuts with Dad Breakfast Matoaka students and their dads, grandfathers, and other father figures were treated to a breakfast buffet and an overview of how dads and other family members can support their children in school by becoming involved with the PTA and its programs.

The Matoaka PTA sponsors many cultural arts programs for students during the year, including author visits, plays, guest speakers, and musical performances. Matoaka students have already enjoyed visits by author Peter Catalanotto and a performance of “Pinocchio” by Virginia Rep on Tour.

Chef Demo for Healthy Lifestyles Week

Chef Chris Long from the Williamsburg restaurant Second Street visited Mataoaka once again to speak with students about healthy eating and how to choose and make healthy recipes. He demonstrated how to make Sweet Potato Bread using sweet potatoes harvested from Matoaka’s own school garden. Try this recipe at home by accessing it here!
