Mattey’s Garden Turns 20!

Mattey’s Garden celebrated its 20th birthday with lots of cool activities! Our PTA provided rocks from Coleman’s Nursery for all of our classes to paint positive phrases and garden pictures on. The First Grade classes hosted families in the garden during where Mrs. Louann Martin read The Three Sisters to classes to teach about the traditional planting of corn, bean, and squash. First graders and families then got to plant each of these vegetables with the master gardeners, explore the garden & pond areas, look at the new additions to the alphabet garden, and find the rocks we painted as part of the PTA project to celebrate Mattey’s Garden’s birthday. Then, on the day of our final celebration, there was a ribbon cutting with Mrs. Ford, PTA members, and several other other important members of the community. What a wonderful way to celebrate the garden we all love so much!

Virginia Symphony Orchestra Visits MW!

The Williamsburg arm of the Virginia Symphony Society provided three VSO musicians for a day of masterclasses and demonstrations for Kindergarten, 1st, and 5th graders. We had Rachel Ordaz (flute), Rodney Martell (trombone), and Mitch Gribbroek (percussion) from the VSO play for us today. They worked with our band students to develop characteristic tone on their instruments, work on articulations, develop sound concepts, and build strong practice habits. We had several band students bravely play solos for the VSO musicians, so that the entire band could learn and apply the points of development the professional musicians spoke about. Later, many Kindergarten and 1st grade students got to hear a Conch Shell, Bass Trombone, Piccolo, Flute, Snare Drum, Tambourine, Orchestral Bells, and Crash Cymbals played by professionals. Each musician spoke about the unique characteristics of their instrument family, and played short excerpts on their instruments. The assembly culminated in a call and response game rhythm challenge, where every student got to play an instrument in response to a call.

Kindergarten Presents: How Does Our Garden Grow?

Our adorable kindergarten crew celebrated spring with their annual performance of, “How Does Our Garden Grow?” We are so proud of these little Patriots and their very first stage performance at MW!

NASA Visits Ms. Lindquist’s Class!

Mr. Robert DeCoursey from NASA came to share with Ms. Lindquist’s first graders all about the Orion spacecraft. We learned about the crew module where astronauts will live, work, and control the spaceship; the service module that provides the power, air, and water for the crew; and the safety systems for launches. Students loved seeing and touching the rocket and module models, exploring all the various astronaut “space” food, trying on some of the astronaut’s equipment, and watching test flights! Every student even took home a NASA goody bag and can build their own desktop model! What a fantastic STEAM opportunity for our first graders!!

First Grade Visits WRL!

The first grade classes went to the Williamsburg Regional Library on April 11 for a tour, story time, library matching game, and a movie on Pocahontas (first grade Famous Virginian, SOL). First graders also had the opportunity to get their very own WRL library card! We have great community partners! Thanks WRL!

Fifth Grade Visits the VA Aquarium!

Our fifth graders recently visited the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach to enhance their learning of science material!

Fourth Grade Visits Yorktown Victory Center!

The weather was incredible, and so was the information learned about the American Revolution at Yorktown Victory Center April 13th! We’re so fortunate for all these opportunities for enrichment to our curriculum.
