The Williamsburg arm of the Virginia Symphony Society provided three VSO musicians for a day of masterclasses and demonstrations for Kindergarten, 1st, and 5th graders. We had Rachel Ordaz (flute), Rodney Martell (trombone), and Mitch Gribbroek (percussion) from the VSO play for us today. They worked with our band students to develop characteristic tone on their instruments, work on articulations, develop sound concepts, and build strong practice habits. We had several band s…tudents bravely play solos for the VSO musicians, so that the entire band could learn and apply the points of development the professional musicians spoke about. Later, many Kindergarten and 1st grade students got to hear a Conch Shell, Bass Trombone, Piccolo, Flute, Snare Drum, Tambourine, Orchestral Bells, and Crash Cymbals played by professionals. Each musician spoke about the unique characteristics of their instrument family, and played short excerpts on their instruments. The assembly culminated in a call and response game rhythm challenge, where every student got to play an instrument in response to a call.
