4th Grade Students Practice the “Daily 5”

Students in Mrs. Darcy’s fourth grade class practice the Daily 5 during Reading Workshop.  The Daily 5 is a structure for reading and writing. The “5” are:

1. Read to self
2. Read to a partner
3. Work on writing
4. Listen to reading
5. Word work (spelling and vocabulary)

This structure allows the students to become independent with their work, freeing up the teacher to conference more with individuals or small groups while experiencing less interruptions.  Keep up the good work!

Constitution Day: September 17, 2014

On Wednesday, September 17th, Norge came together on the blacktop to celebrate Constitution Day and what it means to us today.  Jordan, a fourth grader in Mrs. Beatty’s class, started the program by singing the Star-Spangled Banner.  The SCA officers then led the program with speeches about the Constitution and its relevance to our Norge community.  Special guest Teri Toepke, former 4th grade teacher at Norge, dressed as Miss Sally Blakeney and read the Preamble pausing at each vocabulary word so the SCA officers could explain it in ‘elementary’ terms.  The Advanced Recorders, led by Mrs. Turner, also played various patriotic songs.  The program ended with the SCA officers tasking each class to sign the Norge Pledge and elect two class representatives by the end of the day.

Butterfly Garden gets a Clean Up

Members of the Chickahominy Ruritan Club  helped Ann Beatty, a 4th grade teacher, weed and spruce up the Butterfly Garden.  Thank you!

Racer the Roadrunner Makes his First Appearance

Students were excited to see Racer, our Norge mascot, for the first time this year during the TRACKS assembly on Friday, September 12th.  After students learned what our school-wide expectations are and how to earn TRACKS, Racer surprised the students and danced with Dr. Pickles and Ms. Matthews in celebration.  It was a great way to kickoff the school-wide discipline program for it’s second year.

Dr. Pickles Reads to Every Student

Dr. Pickles starts off the year by reading aloud to every student at Norge.  She is pictured here reading “First Day Jitters” to Mrs. Carlsen’s kindergarten class.

Opening Day

Norge staff welcomed our students into the school building on the first day with smiling faces!  Kindergartners were able to easily follow these large sparkly signs to their classrooms.  We had a great first day!  Go Roadrunners!
