Clean Out Your Closet Challenge

Norge Elementary is participating in the Clothing to Cash Recycling Program.

Help our school raise money!  We accept NEW and USED clothing, shoes, sneakers, towels and textiles.  Every item counts! We want items in ALL conditions, unwanted, outgrown and out of style. Norge Elementary will be paid for every pound we collect.  All materials will be reworn, repurposed, or finally recycled!

Look for the large white collection bin in the Norge front parking lot.  The goal is to FILL the collection bin WEEKLY with as many PLASTIC BAGS of clothing, shoes, and other textiles as possible.

Clothing should never be considered garbage.  Save our landfills and give your items a second life.  This is an easy way for our school to raise money for necessary resources that our children deserve.

Help support our school and save the environment one bag at a time!

2nd Grade Skypes with Jeremy Wheeler

Second grade met in the library on January 20th to Skype with Jeremy Wheeler, a meteorologist on WAVY News 10 Today.  Mr. Wheeler was projected on the large screen as he talked to the second grade about what his job is like and about the tools he uses to predict and report the weather.  The students were wide-eyed as he gave them a tour of the news studio, showed them his “green screen”, and also showed pictures and videos of weather phenomenon such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and lightning.  Students were able to ask questions at the end, such as “How do you become a meteorologist?” and “What is the most extreme weather you have ever reported on?”

Mr. Wheeler will be giving Norge a “shout out” on the WAVY News weather report sometime from 6:30 – 7:00 AM on Wednesday, January 21.

Hour of Code

All Kindergarten, first, and second grade students at Norge Elementary participated in the annual “Hour of Code” during the week of January 12 – 16.  Students learned what it means to be a computer programmer, and spent their 45 minute computer lab centers class with Mrs. Cattell doing basic programming on games provided by code.org.  Students worked together in pairs to navigate mazes using coding “blocks”.  Kindergarten and first grade students moved an Angry Bird North, South, East, and West to get to the evil pig.  Second grade students moved a bee through a maze to get to the honeycomb.  They also had the extra challenge of picking up nectar from flowers on the way, and making honey once they arrived at the honeycomb.  All students had a lot of fun, and learned what it would be like to be a computer programmer when they grow up.

Third, fourth, and fifth graders will be participating in the “Hour of Code” in February.
