Flag Day Celebration at Norge

All students and staff gathered around the flag pole in front of Norge Elementary on June 14th at 9:30 to celebrate Flag Day.  The ceremony was led by the current SCA Officers.  Mr. Deriso, a Norge parent from the Navy, worked with the officers to raise the flag at the beginning of the ceremony.  Later, the officers took turns teaching us about some of our most famous patriotic symbols such as the Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, American Flag, Star Spangled Banner, and Capitol Building.  Students and staff also sang patriotic songs with Mrs. Turner and the Advanced Recorders.

There were also a few special guests during the ceremony such as Taylor, a fifth grade student, who drove his wheelchair around the flag pole proudly displaying the original 13-star American flag.

Also, Mr. and Mrs. Conley came to the ceremony to present their children, Aiden and Allie, with certificates of their dad’s retirement from 20 years in the Coast Guard, and to celebrate the time they can now spend with him at home.

Lastly, the SCA Officers congratulated the new 2016-2017 SCA Officers who were voted into office by their peers for next year:

  • President – Natalia Los
  • Vice President – Andrew Hayes
  • Treasurer – Nicholas Marrero
  • Secretary – Brian Morillo
  • Environmental Protection Officer – Madison Beacham

Second Grade Students Invent Vocabulary Board Games

Students in Mrs. Johnson’s second grade inclusion class worked hard to demonstrate their learning of how words work by creating their very own vocabulary based board games.  The students were given complete creative freedom to design and make the game in a few weeks.  Some game titles were “Sorry With Words”, “Smart Words” and “Doggy Doggy Where’s Your Word”.  On June 8, Mrs. Johnson and her students enjoyed playing the games with each other and teaching them to adults that visited.  Visitors included Dr. Steve Constantino, Ms. Veronda Matthews, Mrs. Heather Evans, Mrs. Stacy Walker, Mrs. Tammy Brown, and Mrs. Tammy Underwood.

Mrs. Carlsen’s Class Goes Camping

Mrs. Carlsen’s kindergarten class learns about summer and all the fun things that go with it!  Mrs. Carlsen’s and Mrs. Perry’s kindergarten class camps out, complete with a hike and s’mores made in our very own s’mores ovens!  We used the sun’s heat to roast our marshmallows and melt our chocolate.

Kindergarten Self Portraits

Kindergarten students worked with Mrs. Wiggins to each create a picture of themselves or “self portrait”. Students used mirrors to find the correct location for each part of their face and worked on making them the correct size. When the drawing was finished, appropriate color choices were made to make each portrait look just like the artist who created it! Check out what an excellent job some of our kindergarten artists did!16-06-08 KG self portraits

3-D Printing at Norge Elementary

4th graders working with Mrs. Collins had the opportunity to create 3-D printed models. The students researched and designed fish having adaptations that would allow them to survive in the benthic zone of the ocean.  This project was done in conjunction with Assistant Professor of Education, Bill McConnell from Virginia Wesleyan College.  Thanks to VWC for this awesome opportunity!
