Norge celebrated Poem in Your Pocket Day on Thursday, April 26 by making sure each student had a poem they could carry in their pocket to share and recite with students and staff. Students were encouraged to read or recite their poem with as many students and staff as possible. It was a fun way to celebrate poetry and practice reading and oral language skills in a new and different way.
Kindergarten registration is May 4, 2018 for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year.
Our budding cyclists in the SHIP Bike Club were given a helmet and learned some basic safety tips and skills. For example they learned the ABC Quick Check (check the Air in your tires, Brakes and Chain) and proper hand signals. They also practiced properly stopping and changing gears. On the last day they participated in a bike derby that gave them the opportunity to use the skills they had been taught.
On April 10, the Young Audiences of Virginia came to Norge Elementary School to present “Tales of the Griot”. Students and staff participated in an interactive and educational program which taught the history of the Griot and cultural influences of Mali.
“Atumpan enchants students with the stories and the instruments of West Africa in this amazing performance of “Tales of the Griot.” After one of your students is crowned chief of the village, the fun really begins. Atumpan shares the importance of how the drum was a primary means of communication in African villages. Students learn about the honored role of the storyteller in African society, while participating in call and response and traditional African drum rhythms.”
