2024 VSBA Business Honor Roll recipients celebrated

Published On: April 17th, 2024

Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Schools recognized three valued community partners named to the Virginia School Boards Association 2024 Business Honor Roll. During the April 16 school board meeting, the following three organizations were honored for their contributions to WJCC Schools and students: James City County Williamsburg Master Gardener Association, The Williamsburg Chapter of the League of Women Voters, and Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc./Newport News Shipbuilding.

These organizations demonstrate a commitment to engaging students in learning opportunities, civic engagement, and career planning that strengthen our entire community.  Through their generous support, students gain exposure to experts in the community and our community is stronger because of these organizations’ ongoing collaboration.

James City County Williamsburg Master Gardener Association

The James City County Williamsburg Master Gardener Association has been a vital supporter of WJCC Schools’ school gardens, which provide a hands-on outdoor classroom for students to learn how plants grow and where their food comes from. Master Gardeners provide lessons integrated across the curriculum, from science to writing, as students learn to become stewards of the earth. We deeply appreciate the work the Masters Gardeners have done to maintain our school gardens throughout the years and the time they spend nurturing and helping our students grow alongside the garden!

The Williamsburg Chapter of the League of Women Voters

The Williamsburg Chapter of the League of Women Voters is a non-partisan group whose main objective is to increase voter participation. Volunteers from the League visit each high school in the fall and spring to host voter registration drives, providing students with information on upcoming primary and regular election dates and requirements for registration, as well as in-person, absentee, and mail-in voting. This organization is an invaluable partner in providing the opportunity for our students to exercise our nation’s most important civic responsibility and right – the right to vote.

Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc./Newport News Shipbuilding

Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. (HII)/Newport News Shipbuilding has avidly supported WJCC Schools’ College & Career Readiness programming. Since the Mock Interview event began in 2022, multiple HII employees have served as interviewers. HII has also participated in the Senior Hiring event for the last two years, resulting in several of our students receiving full-time job offers upon graduation. An employee from Newport News Shipbuilding also serves on our School Board Career Ready Advisory Committee, helping to ensure that our students are college- and career-ready when they graduate. Thank you for your impact on our students – both as students and as future employees!
