The School Board received a detailed presentation of student academic performance. As we dive deeper into the 2026-2027 school year, there are meaningful celebrations from the past year and opportunities for continued focus and growth as we look ahead.
Seven of our nine elementary schools improved their Grade 3 reading pass rates. Student growth, as defined by the Virginia Department of Education measuring a student’s progress from one year to the next, increased in both reading and mathematics. Overall, 90% of students demonstrated growth in reading and 88% in mathematics. The proportion of students absent for 18 or more days across the school year fell from 9.9% to 8%. These results reflect the hard work of our students, educators, staff, and families, and the importance of strong attendance habits. We are proud of the progress our students are making.
We also know there is more work to do. Overall reading and mathematics proficiency was stagnant, and science and writing performance are key areas of focus. We also continue to work to close achievement gaps and ensure students experience consistent success across schools and student groups.
Our focus through our strategic plan, Elevate ’28, is to build on the growth we are seeing, strengthen teaching and learning, and ensure that every student has the support needed to reach their full potential. We are grateful to our students, families, and staff for their continued partnership in accelerating this important work.
