4th and 5th Grade Students Will Return to Classrooms Earlier Than Planned
Beginning February 16, fourth and fifth graders will join students in grades Pre-K through three for hybrid learning, a week earlier than initially planned. Hybrid learning includes two days of in-person learning and three days of remote learning each week. On-site learning days are determined by the student’s last name (A-L on-site Monday and Tuesday; M-Z on-site Wednesday and Thursday).
Why is the change happening now?
As a school division and community, we are taking significant steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19. For the first time since December, COVID-19 positivity rates dipped below 10% yesterday in James City County, where the majority of our students live. More than 79% of all WJCC Schools employees have now received their first dose of the vaccine. School-based staff has completed refresher training on health mitigation strategies. Simultaneously, safety teams visited schools to identify what is working well and areas for improvement. As a result, Dr. Herron is more confident than ever in the division’s ability to begin transitioning students safely to in-person learning.
More than 79% of WJCC Schools teachers and staff received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine, or as we like to call it, the “WJCC Schools Shot of Hope.” Except for those in quarantine due to potential COVID-19 exposure, every employee had the opportunity to get vaccinated. Additionally, 71% of substitutes and student-teachers got the vaccine as well.
WJCC Schools is working with County and City leaders to coordinate dates for staff to receive the second dose of the vaccine approximately 28 days after the first dose. Students may need to complete independent work on remote learning days to allow teachers to attend vaccination clinics.
President’s Day Holiday
and “Grab and Go” Meal Schedule
All WJCC Schools and administrative offices will be closed Monday, February 15, in observance of Presidents’ Day. There will be no “Grab and Go” meal service that day. In advance of the holiday, February 11’s Grab and Go Meal distribution will include five breakfasts and lunches meals for Thursday through Monday.
Division Technology Maintenance Planned for This Weekend
The school division is conducting scheduled maintenance on its student information system, Synergy, beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday, February 14. This will cause temporary outages for StudentVue, ParentVue, and TeacherVue from 5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 14 through 8:00 a.m. Monday, February 15. This maintenance will improve performance for class Zoom sessions and assessments along with other needed improvements.
Fall Sports Season Kicks Off with COVID Waiver and Safety Plans
As part of plans to return students to school buildings during the third marking period, WJCC Schools will participate in Fall varsity athletics. Tryouts and practice for football, cross country, field hockey, golf, volleyball, and competitive cheer begin February 8-15. Each player must have a COVID-19 waiver signed by a parent or guardian acknowledging the risks and expectations for players. Students will not participate in junior varsity or middle school Fall sports seasons; however, they may have the opportunity to take part in Spring sports. Spectators are not permitted to attend Fall sports contests. However, games will be live streamed online.
Students and families are invited to participate in the WJCC Course Planning & Curriculum Fair virtually this year. You can access videos online related to the course offerings in WJCC at both the middle school and high school levels. Additionally, school counselors have created a session on the course planning and registration process. To access this year’s Course Planning & Curriculum Fair, please click here. If you have questions related to any of the courses or about the course planning and registration process, please submit them through the appropriate link below by February 12. WJCC staff will share responses in the next Family Newsletter.
The PSAT 8/9 will be administered to all 9th grade students on Friday, February 26. Please note that this is a change from the initially scheduled date of Tuesday, February 23. Detailed information will be sent to all 9th grade families in the coming days from each school.
