4th and 5th Grade Students Will Return to Classrooms Earlier Than Planned

Beginning February 16, fourth and fifth graders will join students in grades Pre-K through three for hybrid learning, a week earlier than initially planned. Hybrid learning includes two days of in-person learning and three days of remote learning each week. On-site learning days are determined by the student’s last name (A-L on-site Monday and Tuesday; M-Z on-site Wednesday and Thursday).

Why is the change happening now?

As a school division and community, we are taking significant steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19. For the first time since December, COVID-19 positivity rates dipped below 10% yesterday in James City County, where the majority of our students live. More than 79% of all WJCC Schools employees have now received their first dose of the vaccine. School-based staff has completed refresher training on health mitigation strategies. Simultaneously, safety teams visited schools to identify what is working well and areas for improvement. As a result, Dr. Herron is more confident than ever in the division’s ability to begin transitioning students safely to in-person learning.

COVID-19 Vaccination Update

More than 79% of WJCC Schools teachers and staff received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine, or as we like to call it, the “WJCC Schools Shot of Hope.” Except for those in quarantine due to potential COVID-19 exposure, every employee had the opportunity to get vaccinated. Additionally, 71% of substitutes and student-teachers got the vaccine as well.

WJCC Schools is working with County and City leaders to coordinate dates for staff to receive the second dose of the vaccine approximately 28 days after the first dose. Students may need to complete independent work on remote learning days to allow teachers to attend vaccination clinics.

Division Technology Maintenance Planned for This Weekend

Fall Sports Season Kicks Off with COVID Waiver and Safety Plans

As part of plans to return students to school buildings during the third marking period, WJCC Schools will participate in Fall varsity athletics. Tryouts and practice for football, cross country, field hockey, golf, volleyball, and competitive cheer begin February 8-15. Each player must have a COVID-19 waiver signed by a parent or guardian acknowledging the risks and expectations for players. Students will not participate in junior varsity or middle school Fall sports seasons; however, they may have the opportunity to take part in Spring sports. Spectators are not permitted to attend Fall sports contests. However, games will be live streamed online.
