The start of the new school year will bring changes to elementary and middle school schedules. Like many school divisions across the country, WJCC Schools is facing bus driver shortages that require staff to re-evaluate routes and the timing of bus runs. Adjustments to middle and elementary school hours increase transportation efficiency and create a consistent instructional day for all students in grades 6-8. High school times and early release schedules will not change.

At the middle school level, Toano will join the division’s three other middle schools by starting at 8:05 a.m. The middle school day will end 10 minutes earlier than in past years; however, time in core subjects will be protected. This schedule exceeds Virginia instructional requirements, allows the division to “bank” additional time, and permits an earlier start to afterschool activities. Additionally, buses will complete afternoon runs for middle schools earlier, reducing the number of buses arriving late at elementary schools.

Beginning August 30, elementary school schedules also change to eliminate additional minutes added several years ago to make up for snow days. WJCC Schools will continue to exceed Virginia instructional requirements and protect class time in core subject areas while also “banking” extra time in case of inclement weather or other emergency closure.

In addition to ongoing efforts to recruit bus drivers, the school division will contract out some transportation services for the 2021-2022 school year. The school division will post bus stop and route information on wjccschools.org no later than August 22.
