Students Sample Colonial Life at Clara Byrd Baker

Published On: December 12th, 2022

Fourth graders at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School sampled what life was like in colonial times as the culminating activity of their Colonial Life unit. Students identified merchants’ goods and services using context clues and analyzing signs hanging from storefronts. Students also tasted everything from Brunswick stew, which they helped prepare to hoecakes, an early version of cornbread tracing its history to early Native Americans. Trying traditional games such as balero, a cup-in-ball game, string games, and jackstraws, also known as pick-up sticks, proved to be quite entertaining. No matter the time, kids of all ages enjoy a good competition. Thanks to our teachers for making learning fun with hands-on activities!
