With all of the changes to COVID restrictions, it’s hard to know who needs to wear a mask and when. According to the governor’s recent announcement, students, employees and visitors – regardless of their vaccination status – must wear a mask in school buildings, offices, and while they are on a school bus.

However, based on additional guidance from the Virginia Department of Education and input from the WJCC Health advisory group, the school division is changing its requirement for outdoor use of masks. Beginning Monday, May 24, WJCC Schools will allow students and vaccinated adults to remove their face coverings when they are outside on school property IF they can maintain six feet of social distancing from others.

WJCC Schools Mask Use Practices:

  • Masks are required for all students, staff, parents, and visitors while inside school buildings/offices.
  • Students who are participating outdoors in PE or recess do not need to wear a face covering.
  • Staff members who have been fully vaccinated (14 days from final dose) do not need to wear a mask when outdoors on school property during the school day.
  • Staff and students may continue to wear a mask outdoors if they so choose.
