WJCC Schools appoints Dr. Daniel F. Keever superintendent

At its meeting Tuesday, the Williamsburg James City County School Board unanimously named Dr. Daniel F. Keever as its superintendent, effective June 1, 2025.

The announcement follows a months-long nationwide search and rigorous multi-stage interview process. The School Board was honored to receive applications from more than 40 candidates. In each stage, applicants were evaluated in the context of the division’s strategic plan, student achievement goals, and candidate profile as defined by community stakeholders. School Board members carefully considered and independently evaluated candidates through several rounds, narrowing the pool of candidates following each phase. Keever emerged as a top candidate at each stage.

“After a thorough and thoughtful process, we are confident that Dr. Keever brings the vision, experience, and leadership we need to build on our current successes and incorporate new ideas to drive future growth,” said Sarah G. Ortego, WJCC Schools Board Chair. “Dr. Keever’s performance throughout the interview process stood out consistently among a highly qualified pool of candidates. Dr. Keever offers the unique combination of fresh perspective and established relationships that will allow him to efficiently effectuate change.”

Joining WJCC Schools in 2020 and serving as Deputy Superintendent since 2023, Keever has played a key role in advancing the division’s priorities through its strategic plan, facilitating school board revisions of policies, and forward-planning to increase capacity to serve the area’s youngest learners through construction of two dedicated pre-k centers.

Prior to joining WJCC Schools, Keever served as Senior Executive Director for High Schools at Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Keever’s 30-year career in public education also includes experience as a school security officer, teacher, instructional specialist, assistant principal, and principal.

Keever will officially assume the superintendent position on June 1, 2025; he has served as acting superintendent since February 1, 2025. Keever was named acting superintendent on October 15, 2024, following the announcement of Dr. Olwen Herron’s retirement, effective January 31, 2025.
