The Williamsburg Dukes, a chapter of the James Madison University (JMU) alumni association, wanted to show support for neighboring Newport News teacher and JMU alumna Abby Zwerner. The group decided on a book drive and named it Abby’s Book Club.

“We discussed what we could do after feeling so helpless after the tragedy. I suggested a book drive to share positive messages with students, and Abby’s family supported the idea,” said Heather Cline, a Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Schools employee and leadership team member of the Williamsburg Dukes.

A wish list for Abby’s Book Club was shared via social media and JMU communications, and almost 600 books were collected. Williamsburg Dukes members volunteered to unbox and sort books for distribution to local elementary schools in Newport News, York County, Williamsburg-James City County, New Kent, and West Point – locations with active JMU alumni and a regional connection to Zwerner. A label was placed in each book referencing Abby’s Book Club and sharing a positive message with the reader.

“We were excited to have enough [donations] to give 12 books to each school,” said Kimberley Hundley, WJCC Schools School Board member and JMU alumna.

Hundley and Kline presented WJCC Schools elementary school librarians with books from Abby’s Book Club during their most recent professional development day.

Thank you to the Williamsburg Dukes for spreading love and support, and for sharing this gift with our elementary schools!
