The purpose of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is to:

  • Enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school
  • Make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age
  • Facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools

SRTS is has been active in Virginia since 2007 and helps schools and communities across the state make walking and biking to school a safe, convenient, natural activity.

Education SRTS teaches how to walk and bike safely as well as informing drivers on how to drive safely around pedestrians and bicyclists.

Encouragement – promotes walking and bicycling to school to students and their families through events such as Walk to School Day, contests such as Frequent Biker Challenge and on-going programs such as Walking School Buses and Bike Trains.

Enforcement – Strategies involves the school, its students, their families, and local law enforcement  in helping to change unsafe behaviors of all travelers.

Engineering – Improvements to create a safer environment for walking and bicycling by enhancing infrastructure around schools.

Evaluation – Practices that can be incorporated throughout the school year to track progress and outcomes of all SRTS activities.
