Elementary & Middle School Summer Program

Program Duration

  • 9 a.m – 12 p.m. (Monday – Thursday)
  • 17 instructional days
  • Project Based Learning (PBL) Closing Program will take place on
    • Elementary: July 25, at 10 a.m.
    • Middle School: July 24, at 10 a.m.

Summer Program Description

  • Program Goal: to provide short, intense, instruction for students who struggle in the areas of English (reading/writing) and mathematics.
  • PBL will assist students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.

Open House

  • Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Matoaka Elementary School (grades K – 4)
  • James Blair Middle School (grades 5 – 8)

Dates/Time/Location

  • June 25 – July 25, 2019, (Student Holiday July 3 & 4)
  • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Monday – Thursday)

Registration

  • Selected students in grades K–8 will attend the summer program and parents of these students will be notified by their child’s principal by May 31, 2019.
  • Selected students that fail to return signed summer program forms will be removed from the registration list and those on the wait list will be invited to enroll in the Summer program.

Attendance

Regular attendance at the summer program is very important because of the fast pace and high concentration of daily work.  In order for the students to make sufficient progress, students are expected to be in attendance each day.

  • K-8 – Students with 3 or more unexcused absences will be withdrawn from the program.

Conduct

Any student whose behavior is disruptive and interferes with classroom instruction will be dismissed by the summer program principal. The WJCC Code of Student Conduct (available on the WJCC website) outlines the expectations for student behavior. Students will be subject to suspension or dismissal from classes if they violate policies with regard to student conduct.

Dress Code

Adherence to the School Board Code of Dress shall also be maintained: “All students are expected to wear dress appropriate to the occasion; extreme or ostentatious apparel or appearance is to be avoided. Any article of clothing or accessory which advertises alcohol or an illegal substance, depicts lewd graphics, displays offensive or obscene language, or is gang-related is forbidden.” 

Food Services

Breakfast is available during the Summer Program at the elementary and middle school level. Snack foods are available for purchase during the high school program.

Transportation

Transportation is provided for K-8 (general education) students, ESL students and pre-K–12 special education students.
