If I take an online course, how can I be successful?

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools (WJCC) will continue to expand and invest in online programs for the 2016 – 2017 Summer Program. There are key characteristics that the online student should possess to be successful in an online environment.  The following characteristics will enable students to be successful:

  • Self-disciplined
While on-line courses allow a great deal of flexibility for a student, they require more independence and self-monitoring. The online learner must be able to stay on task, start and finish assignments in a timely manner without someone keeping you focused, and follow course modules and meet deadlines.
  • Organized
Even though you may not have to be in class on a specific day and at a specific time, the online learner will need to follow course modules provided by the instructor and stay on task daily. Scheduling specific times during the day to login and study is important to the success of online learning. Never wait until the last minute to complete assignments.
  • Committed
This will require dedication on the student’s part. Keeping up with class and completing and submitting all work on time is critical.  It is easy to get behind and an even greater challenge to catch up. When a question arises, seek the support and assistance of the instructor.
  • Critical Thinker
Learning requires a process in which the online learner will make decisions about their own learning and experiences. The learner will need to analyze and evaluate the subject matter, raise questions, think open-mindedly and figure out solutions to complex problems.
  • Proactive
Successful online learners take responsibility for their own learning. In fact, the successful online learner takes control of a situation and asks questions before it’s too late.
  • Computer Literate and Unlimited Computer and Internet Access
The online learner will need basic knowledge of computers and internet skills in order to be successful in an online course. This will require on-going access to a laptop/computer, an internet connection and an up-to-date web browser.
