I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and though I‘ve been gone for almost 25 years, I’m a hometown girl and die-hard Orioles fan! I’ve lived on both coasts of the U.S. and Williamsburg has been home for the last 13 years – the longest I have lived anywhere since finishing college. I love a good book, coaching volleyball, and being at the beach I have two kiddos in WJCC and am proud to support Bright Beginnings!
Sherry PhillipsClara Byrd Baker
I started in the division as a substitute for Central Office in December 2006. I have worked at Matthew Whaley, Warhill, Norge, Berkeley and for the Pony. I helped open J. Blaine Blayton and was there part time Office Assistant. In 2011, I was hired as the Registrar/Administrative Assistant for Clara Byrd Baker and I absolutely love it here. I have a son, daughter, son-in-law, and beautiful granddaughter. GO BEARS

I grew up in Upstate New York and graduated from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. I have had the pleasure to work at D.J. Montague for six years.

This is my 9th year working for WJCC Schools and all nine of them have been at J. Blaine Blayton. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside many wonderful people over my years at Blayton and to have developed relationships with students and families along the way that I continue to develop to this day. I would like to thank my co-workers for honoring me with this Support Employee of the Year Award.

My family and I relocated from Chicago to Williamsburg five years ago and that is how long I have been a part of the James River family! All four of my kids were students at James River Elementary and for the last three years have had the privilege to work here. I love begin part of this family! I am currently the media assistant and enjoy it every day. I am also the PTA Lego Club leader and a PTA Bridge Club Sponsor.
Fran MasseyLaurel Lane
I was born and raised in North Carolina. I am married and have two sons and a grandson. My husband was in the Navy for 20 years so I have lived in several different states. I have worked for WJCC schools for 19 years. I work with 2nd and 5th grade students at Laurel Lane Elementary.
I was born in San Antonio, Texas. My father was in the Army so we moved about every three years. We moved to Williamsburg when I was 12 years old. I studied Library Science at Western Kentucky University. I have been married to my husband Chris for 37 years. I have two sons, 6 grandchildren and a dog named Ernie. I have been working WJCC for 23 years.
Karen BrighamMatthew Whaley
After graduating from William & Mary, I taught in Hampton. In 1992, I became a kindergarten assistant at Matthew Whaley. This is my 27th year there, and I have also been a 1st – 5th grade teacher assistant, kindergarten teacher, 1st grade teacher, and SPED assistant. It has always been an honor and blessing to support the dedicated, creative, exemplary staff at Matthew Whaley!
I was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. I obtained my Associate of Science degree from TNCC and my Bachelor of Science. degree from Old Dominion University. Before becoming a part of the Roadrunner family, I was previously employed as a cafeteria manager with Newport News Public Schools. This is my eighth year as cafeteria manager at Norge Elementary School. I am a member of SNA-VA. I also teach SHIP Cooking club at Norge Elementary.
I have worked more than 10 years as a Kindergarten assistant and spent the last two as a Special Education assistant. I also help with busses in the mornings and afternoons and help fund and maintain the Virginia Native Garden.
I have worked at Berkeley Middle School for 19 years. Berkeley is my home away from home. I can’t imagine working anywhere else. I have met so many amazing students, parents and staff. It’s always so great seeing your past students all grown up. I am married and have five children, three grandchildren and four fur-babies. I enjoy sitting at the pier with my husband, Nate, and fishing the day away.
Robin BakerJames Blair
I was born and raised in Nebraska, but have lived in Williamsburg since 2006. I’ve been with WJCC schools since 2013 when I started as a substitute. Currently I serve as a paraprofessional at JBMS. I have been taking special education classes through Liberty and UVA, with goals of becoming a certified Special Education teacher very soon. I am honored to be representing JBMS!
Janet WeissLois S. Hornsby
I am a special education aide who works with students with disabilities to strengthen their academic and functional skills. I have worked with WJCC schools for 20 years and counting. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Fine Art from Towson University, and have completed numerous courses and classes to further my education.
I have been the Cafeteria Monitor at Toano Middle School from 2013 to the present. I am responsible for monitoring all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students during their lunch period- ensuring the students do not misbehave but still enjoy their lunch with their classmates or friends. I also act as a mentor. Prior to my current position, I retired from the United States Air Force with over 35 years of military service.
I have been with WJCC since 2006 and Jamestown High School since 2014, first as attendance associate, and currently as the receptionist. Jamestown has been a second home to me, as my husband worked here for the past twelve years and my four children all graduated from here. My four kids went from being Eagles to Hokies where two are still attending and two have graduated.
I am a native of Williamsburg and a 1989 graduate of Lafayette High School. I started my career with WJCC Public Schools in 1997 as a bus driver. In 2006 I became a clinic assistant and served in that position for six years, and for the last five years I have been an administrative assistant at Lafayette. When I’m not working I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and going to the beach.
I grew up in Virginia Beach, went to Virginia Tech where I met my lovely wife Selena. We’ve been married 24 years and live in Newport News with our two sons AJ and Andrew. AJ is a sophomore at Radford university, while Andrew is a junior at Woodside high.
Debbie BaileyCentral Office
I work in the Office of School Leadership and support both the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary and Secondary Education. I also support the office of Assessment and Accountability. I love my job and it allows me to interact daily with all schools in our division as well as parents and community members. My husband and I live in Williamsburg and our grandchildren attend WJCC schools.
I started work for the school system in 1976. The only way I could get a job here was to start as a custodian at Rawls Byrd Elementary. One year later I was hired as a carpenter in the maintenance department. First year I was in maintenance we moved the business office from one site to another and there were only six people that work there. I’m married I had two children that both went to WJCC schools.
I have been employed with WJCC Public Schools for three years. I have an Associate‘s degree in IT Cisco Networking from Thomas Nelson Community College. When I can find time and the weather is nice I enjoy playing disc golf. Recently, I’ve been learning about the different hunting seasons in Virginia, as I would like to experience the thrill of the hunt.
I have been a mechanic with WJCC Schools Transportation for seven years.
