Each year the WJCC Schools Calendar Committee works within guidelines shaped by state law, district policy, employee contracts, and established practices to develop future academic calendars. On behalf of the Calendar Committee, administration presented the recommended 2023-2024 calendar to the School Board on Thursday, January 5, 2023.
The calendar reflects considerations and prior feedback shared with the Committee, to include:
- Concerted effort to reduce early release days. As a result, November 6 and 7, 2023, are scheduled as student holiday/non-attendance days. Conferences would be conducted on these days, rather than on half-day afternoons as in the past.
- Desire for dedicated time to close out the first semester. As a result, January 25 and 26, 2024, are scheduled as student holiday/non-attendance days.
As drafted, the 2023-2024 calendar contains nine days off at winter break with the last day of school on Thursday, June 13, 2024. The School Board has expressed an interest in learning the community’s thoughts on the length of winter break as it connects to the last day of school and the beginning of summer break. If additional day(s) are taken as holidays, instructional time needs to be recaptured elsewhere – for example, if a 10th day off for winter break were included, the last day of school could become Friday, June 14, 2024.
