WHS Accepts No Kid Hungry Virginia Challenge

January 17, 2017

Greetings Warhill Families!

School breakfast can have a potentially dramatic effect on students. On average, students who eat school breakfast achieve higher standardized math test scores and attend more days of school per year. In Virginia, nearly 260,000 children, however, enter class hungry each morning, according to the No Kid Hungry Virginia campaign. This campaign is the result of a public-private partnership that brings together the Virginia departments of health and education and other organizations.

In WJCC Schools, 40% of middle and high school students skip breakfast some or most days, and 58% of middle and high school students told us in a survey that when they skip breakfast, they have a harder time paying attention and doing their work.  Almost 80% of Warhill students who are eligible for a free or reduced price breakfast do not participate in the current program, and many of these students report that they do not eat breakfast at school because they do not have enough time.

Starting on Monday, February 6, 2017, Warhill High School will expand its current breakfast options to include a “Second Chance Breakfast” as well as “Breakfast after the Bell” to accommodate our students. The Café Cart will also expand current offerings – including smoothies, grab-and-go items, coffee and tea.  These offerings will be available to all students. In the coming days, the WJCC Child Nutrition Services department will provide more details about these exciting new options and offerings.

To support expanded breakfast offerings, we will change the time of Academic Enrichment Time (AEP) from 10:20-10:50 a.m. to 7:20-7:50 a.m. The change scheduling AEP will allow us to serve breakfast to students even if they do not arrive on time on a given morning. AEP will follow the same daily schedule and procedures as currently implemented. A revised WHS Bell Schedule is attached for your review.  Warhill Bell Schedule 2016- 2017 UPDATED Jan 17 2017

I, in addition, am pleased to announce that Warhill will offer a new senior privilege in conjunction with this change for the second semester: a pass that exempts a student from attending AEP. To be eligible for the pass, students must be a member of the Class of 2017 and in good standing (grades, discipline and dues/fines). Specific guidelines for this pass will be shared with the Class of 2017 at their Class Meeting on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. If you have any questions concerning this pass please contact the 12th grade assistant principal Justin Throupe at 565-4615 ext. 12236.

Warhill is excited to collaborate with Child Nutrition Services and SHIP as we accept the No Kid Hungry Virginia challenge.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey D. Carroll Ph.D.

Principal
