* We continue to recognize the significant achievements of African Americans during Black History month by acknowledging Booker T Washington. He was born a slave on a Virginia farm; Washington rose to become one of the most influential African-American intellectuals of the late 19th century. In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Institute, a black school in Alabama devoted to training teachers. Washington was also behind the formation of the National Negro Business League 20 years alter, and he served as an adviser to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.

* Project Discovery will be meeting after school today in room 1124 from 2:30 – 4:00 PM.

* Attention Lions – spring sports tryouts begin the week of February 18. Check athletic website for specific details for each sport. You must have a current VHSL physical form on file in Athletic Directors office in order to try out. Contact the Head Coach of sport if you have questions.

* There will be a brief baseball interest meeting today for anyone interested in playing Baseball this spring. If you are interested in playing, meet in the health room, 1504, right after school. Important tryout information will be given at this meeting.

* Girls Tennis interest meetings this week:

Experienced players meet after school today in Room 1405. On Thursday, February 14, new players meet with Captain & Coach Gomes about tennis basics. Tryouts begin Tuesday, February 19 after school.

* Hola! Are you in need of the perfect Valentine’s Day gift? Do you love having a positive impact on education and employment? Purchase a handwoven bracelet or purse to support the Pulsera Project. All items are handmade by over 200 artists in Nicaragua and Guatemala. All proceeds will go towards education and employment opportunities. Purchase your bracelets during all lunches this week!

• We continue to recognize the significant achievements of African Americans during Black History month by acknowledging Langston Hughes, a famous poet and writer during the Harlem Renaissance. Langston Hughes wrote various poems, novels, and newspaper articles on what the “African American” experience was and offered hope to millions of people around the world. He also created “jazz poetry”. In addition, paved the way for many African American musicians, including Louis Armstrong.

• Congratulations to the 20 students who participated in District Choir this weekend and to Leslie Walker, Justin Hight, and Cody Watson who were selected to represent Warhill in the All Virginia State Choir.

* We continue to recognize the significant achievements of African Americans during Black History month by acknowledging Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) Nelson Mandela was in prison for over 20 years because he had fought to end the apartheid in South Africa. After being released from prison he was elected the first president in South Africa after apartheid ended, he was elected due to his forgiveness and willingness to work with the white community in South African, which had previously placed him in prison.

* Attention Lions – spring sports tryouts begin the week of February 18. Check athletic website for specific details for each sport. You must have a current VHSL physical form on file in Athletic Directors office in order to try out. Contact the Head Coach of sport if you have questions.

* We continue to recognize the significant achievements of African Americans during Black History month by acknowledging Ruby Bridges. Ruby Bridges is a civil rights activist who at the age of six became the first African American child in the south to attend all whit school. Bridges was one of only six children who passed the New Orleans Board of Education’s test for African American children to attend all-white schools. Bridges later created the Ruby Bridges Foundation to continue promoting the values acceptance and tolerance for everyone.

* We continue to recognize the significant achievements of African Americans during Black History month by acknowledging Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and was awarded Rookie of the Year in 1947, was an All-Star for six consecutive seasons, and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949. In 1997, the MLB retired his jersey number 42 across all major league teams in his honor.

* There will be an interest meeting on Thursday at 2:30 in the Lecture Hall for Outdoor Track and Field.

* We continue to recognize the significant achievements of African Americans during Black History month by acknowledging Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, poet, and civil rights activist best known for her memoir, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings. This novel made literary history as the first nonfiction best-seller by an African American Woman. Angelou received several honors throughout her career, including two NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding literary work (nonfiction) category, in 2005 and 2009.

* Attention Warhill – the Lady Lions Basketball team will host Jamestown High School today. JV starting at 5:30pm and Varsity at 7:00pm. Tickets will be sold during all three lunches today, for $5. The first 30 tickets sold will include a T-shirt. Come out and support the Lady Lions as they host the Eagles of Jamestown.

* Goodbye January, hello February. Beginning today, we will recognize the significant accomplishments of these African Americans and their mark in our history:

Dorothy Johnson was part of a NASA team of engineers who did mathematical calculations to help launch satellites into space. When she was first hired, her department was segregated due to race, but six years later, she became the manager of her division and its first African American supervisor. She later joined the Analysis and Computation division, where she worked on the program that launched the first astronauts into space.

* Are you a coder who is interested in Arduino? If so, join staff from The College of William & Mary on February 4th for a day of coding and competition.

See Mr. A. in room 1302 or your counselor for more information and a field trip permission form.

* Nothing to do before school on Tuesday mornings from 7:00-7:10? Why not come by room 1130 and take part of some Bible study and prayer.

* Attention Warhill – the Lady Lions Basketball team will host Jamestown High School on Monday, Feb. 4 with JV starting at 5:30pm and Varsity at 7:00pm.
